Most of the sibling groups we know of are named alphabetically, like Jacques, Kit, and Lemony, and Dewey, Ernest, and Frank. So I find it curious that Violet, Klaus, and Sunny and Isadora, Duncan, and Quagmire have names all over the alphabet. Maybe once they are in VFD, they are regrouped into groups of 3 according to name, and then given new last names? That doesn't really explain the identicalness of DEF though. Just something I found interesting. (I debated putting this in the VFD family tree thread, but this is primarily about VKS, with the tree as a sideline, so I decided Sardonic Series was best. )

Maybe in the past, VFDers have had some tradition of naming their children in alphabetical order(or giving them names with consecutive letters, in the case of twins such as Kit and Jacques or triplets like the Denouements). Since the Baudelaires were born much later than the Snickets or Denouements, they weren't named that way. But I think the whole alphabetical-name thing is just something Handler rather likes and/or did to fit the family tree.

Much like the apparent trend of V.F.D. families having three children, I don't think there's any actual reason for alphabetical names - it just looks good. If I had multiple children, I'd be tempted to give them alphabetical names.
Edit: And Klaus and Sunny, and Duncan and Isadora's names are allusions anyway. There's no way to make those fit alphabetical order, although I don't think that was on Handler's mind when he introduced the characters.

I didn't even NOTICE that, Daisy. Good observation!

Me too, I never noticed that before...that is very interesting...I would have to agree with Anetora's idea , that in the past it was a tradition for VFD members to name the children alphabetically....and if that is not the answer then maybe they change their name when they enter the organization

Yes, but I just don't think that they change their names when they enter the organization. It would be too much of a hassle, plus it would take the recruits forever to get used to their new name.

If they're typically taken when they are very young, it could be easy to change their name.

It would be rather confusing for a four-year-old child if their name was changed, though.

Oh, thanks for the Denouement triplets bit, I was wondering who those three were on the VFD tree. *checks UA*

I'm not blaming him for not trying, in fact, I would have done the same thing.

I kind of think that after being in VFD their names are changed but I also tjink it would be a hassle

But that doesn't explain the reasoning for the initialed hankerchiefs in TPP at the picnic. If they were taken at a younger age, wouldn't it have been easier to change their names? But they found out about VFD much later. Perhaps their parents didn't want them involved in it?

I think renaming the children when they took them would be a little unnecessary, partly because they'd be at an age where they'd have already grown used to their name, and partly because it isn't really necessary (plus it would be depriving them of one of the few remnants of the life they left behind when they were recruited).
As for the Baudelaires, I think it's possible V.F.D. was going to recruit them when Sunny was older, so that they could take all three children at the same time (as apparently happened with the Snicket siblings). That doesn't quite work, though, considering that Violet and Klaus would have been of an appropriate age long before Sunny's birth, so we can either say "Well, Handler didn't have V.F.D. and details of it in mind when he wrote TBB, so just ignore it" or we can continue to come up with our own explanations, such as: The Baudelaire parents, as important volunteers, would have been in a position to raise them in accordance with V.F.D.'s principles, so there would be no need to inform them of V.F.D. until they were at a more mature age OR the Baudelaire parents were expelled from V.F.D. over the scandalous affair of the murder of Olaf's parents OR as you suggested, the parents thought V.F.D. was too dangerous for their children to be mixed up in OR etc.

I am releived to find such intelligent people at these forums - intelligent being that you here actually look into the things Handler throws in, unlike the local so-called "ASOUE Fanatics" here. I agree with something along the lines of what Antenora said, about tradition. But I also think it has something to do with the fact that the Baudelaire parents knew something tragic would happen i.e. the fire-though they most likely didn't know what exactally. And that VFD was going to change. I think, that maybe, after the schism, VFD was not going to be the same.

I think it has to do with the timing of the schism. Considering that Kit was 4 years old at the time of the schism, it's likely that Olaf, the Baudelair parents, the Denoumants and the other people that appear on the family tree were all at least born at the time of the schism. The tradition of alphabetical naming in VFD could have been stopped after the schism just as tatooing has stopped, which would explain why the Baudelaires and Quagmires don't have alphabetical names.
