I have decided that I am going to get a tattoo of the VFD eye on my ankle tomorrow. I am using the one that is used as the standard post icon here and is also found in the Unauthorized Autobiography and the Misfortune Telling Cards (and a billion other places, I'm sure), the one that looks like an eye and the letters VFD. Although I have settled on that image, I have yet to decide the location on my ankle. I did a quick scan of the illustrations in the books last night and (although it is likely I missed some- it was a VERY quick scan and I only looked in the novels, not in any of the other books), I was only able to find two showing somebody with the tattoo. One was on the cover of The End, which shows the tattoo on the INSIDE of Count Olaf's left ankle. The other was from TVV, which shows the tattoo on the OUTSIDE of Jacques Snicket's left ankle. If anybody knows or feels like they have a good idea of where the tattoo should go, a speedy reply would be very welcome. Thank you!

I believe it's generally accepted as the inside left ankle; the picture with Jacques with the tattoo on his outside left is a one-off inconsistency, probably just artistic license to give a good view of it (or one could argue it's to foreshadow the fact that he's not really Count Olaf). This is reinforced by the chapter pictures for TBB Chapter 12, TWW Chapter 13, and TSS Chapter 10.
It's a good thing you're just looking for the location of the tattoo and not its appearance, as Helquist has never once drawn it accurately or even consistently on someone's ankle, despite getting both its "official" and "unofficial" appearances correct repeatedly in other contexts. (Let me explain my terminology: The "official" form I consider to be the one that appears on V.F.D. documents in the U.A. and TCC and the Hotel Denouement stationery in TGG, and the "unofficial" form is the more subtle version that appears on tents and signs in TCC and TSS (and hidden in the new TBB and TRR paperbacks) and in corrupted form on Olaf's ankle. So I'd actually try and get the latter as a tattoo, although it's not so easy to find a non-distorted version of it.)
