I liked the two pages of blackness the best. I mean, who else do you know that'd be brave enough to do something like that? So Snicketish.

I think there's a surrealist novel called Tristam Shandy that has two pages of blackness to symbolize the mental state of the character.(My parents told me about this in reference to TEE's blackness).

The Passageway by far. It makes even more sense if you've read the next few books. Brings up a lot of questions:
1. Did the parents escape through here? (We don't know for sure if one, let alone two really died. Well, there's evidence that "one died for sure," but I wouldn't put anything past Mr. "Snicket."
2. Was it a V.F.D? (See Book the Tenth. Don't want to spoil it.) Had there been a pole there long ago that was used, and like the others, torn down?
3. Why would there be a little cell down there? To hold enemies captive?
4. Count Olaf obviously knew of it, which means he may have used that very passageway to burn down the Baudelair mansion. At the same time, he may have been the one to show up as the "Official" fire department, on top of this, what if he used the Baudelaire's own cell in the V.F.D. against them and has them hidden away somewhere, like he does with so many others?
Lots to think about.

While I think Esme is a wonderful character, those two black pages just took me so completely by surprise that I laughed hysterically until my brother came in and asked what was wrong. I never, ever (ever ever ever etc.) expected that.

Voted two pages of blackness. That was very creative and amusing, and really, who'd think of that besides Snicket? probably no one. This is just like in book the ninth, the deja vu thing.

i chose the passageway; it linked things together nicely. although i had always just assumed that was the way olaf/whoever commited the arson. i'd never thought that one of the parents could have escaped through it. interesting. . . .
although my real favorite part was everyone doing what's "in" even if the "in" thing was incredibly rediculous. great satire.

Other: Sunny climbing the eleveator shaft with her teeth. No one in my family can read that without giggling, and everyone else knows exactly where they are in the story. It is simply the most absurd thing in the books, to that point, and possibly beyond.

I just adore the whole scene taking place at the In Auction. I can just picture it so well in my head. However, I also think the setting of 667 Dark Ave. what with the height - and then of course the description of all the rooms in the penthouse - is just phenomenally genius, almost to a Douglas Adams level. The Ersatz Elevator is one of my favorites for sure, along with The Vile Village.
