Is anyone else bothered by Esme's adulterous ways? She is married to Jerome, but Olaf is her boyfriend. Doesn't Jerome care? Is she going to get a divorce? Lemony Snicket just glosses over the adultery.

I was also wondering what happened to Jerome after Esme left him for Olaf. Will he be coming back for revenge sometime later? I guess Lemony didn't want to give us the details on the adultery because this is a children's series.

Adultery is off limits, but murder, arson, kidnapping and bad hygeine are fair game?
Also, remember Jerome Squalor is another JS, the initials from the fridge. I too think he will return at some point.

Handler said in an interview that he didn't know how to create villains that didn't do villainous things (ie: Olaf's child-harassing ways, Esmé's cruelty to Jerome/leaving him/what have you). It honestly doesn't bug me, because it helps establish the character, which is the point. You can't ban books for having bad guys who do bad things (which is what he was responding to in the interview, by the way).

Did you hear about the school district that banned Snicket's books because of the suggestions of incest in The Bad Beginning? Perhaps this incident was the reason Lemony decided to gloss over the adultery, to avoid a similar problem.

Yeah, I think that's what he was talking about in the interview.
It's not so much the incest that bugs me because they're so distantly related. It's that he was basically forcing her to be his wife unwillingly and she was 14. That's just a big no-no when you're a 40-year old man, isn't it? It was wrong anyway, and the incest doesn't really make it all that much worse. What exactly are they worried about, here?

I heard this one school banned him for, pardon me, damn twice in TRR.

Yes they did. If they banned everything that uses the word damn, has villains who do bad things, there would be nothing left to read but The Littlest Elf.

Indeed. I think I may have posted this before, but a school somewhere once banned Anne Frank's diary because it was "a real downer". And there was a school that banned several books for using the word "b!tch", in reference to a dog.

There were schools that banned goosebumps simply because they didn't find them educational. What kind of crap is this stuff? Ugh. Anyway...

WHAT? I suppose they'll ban newspapers next for having violent content.
They are overreacting. Let them read what they want to, at least they can read. And if they read lots of books they can instinctively make grammatically correct sentnces.

I don't think my school has banned any books, at least not in my time. But I've heard about schools forbidding children to do reports on Goosebumps books(one of my classes had this rule in junior high) because they're thinly plotted or something. Some people take offense at everything.

My school almost banned Harry Potter, as many did. They kept saying Haryy was on drugs. WTF... It was very strange.

They said that potions were drugs. I don't know how, but...
