Obviously, the Quagmires are the Baudelaires only "true friends" at Profruck Prep - but do you think there were other kids who would occasionally say something nice to the Baudelaires/Quagmires? I can't imagine that every single kid in school other than the Baudelaires/Quagmires would be so mean-spirited. I'm sure there were other misfits in the school who maybe didn't talk to the Baudelaires/Quagmires, because they feared that the Baudelaires/Quagmires might reject them. I'd think there might be the occasional kid who would maybe try to be nice to everyone, though.

I think if TAA - and the books in the series generally - were longer, I'm sure there would have been. We may choose to believe that Snicket is only recording events of direct relevance to the plot or to the Baudelaires, which leaves a lot of room for interpretation, for speculation about things that didn't quite "make the cut," even if they were important to another story.

Some them tried (I guess) knowing / talking to those orphans but with Carmelita's chanting, I'm sorry to say that nobody dared to do it. They wouldn't risk their self-esteem to something (in their POV) unworthy.
