I have a feeling that it takes place somewhat recently, in the last century or so. For one in TSS it talks about how when Violet invents a way to stop the caravan from it's doom, she used the hammock to slow down the caravan, when she talks about how people use it for race cars, well race cars originated in France in 1894, how would someone in Atlantis know about it? Besides Atlantis was long gone a LONG time ago so if they were on Atlantis it would be before race cars came to be. Also, in TGG they meet some VFD-ers on a submarine, well submarines came in 1912 by an American. The submarines took 23 men to navigate and were 135 feet long. The one in TGG didn't have that many people on it, so it must have been awhile after. I'm thinking around the 60's...?

Lemony also mentions the first world war, though that is Lemony, not the bauds. Kinda looks like 1920s to me or so. in AUSTRALIA!!! Meh. I dunno. I don't think I ever will.

I support the Atlantis/Mu argument. Seriously, I think it is in Snicketville, which based off San Francisco.

Okay, COME ON. The series does NOT take place in Antlantis or Mu or on Pluto for that matter. Just like very many other realistic ficion novels/series, it takes place in a city MODELED OFF OF ACTUAL CITIES. We don't know whether the series takes place in America, Europe, Canada, Australia, or another place with Western culture. But IT DOESN'T MATTER. It's a city BASED OFF OF an ACTUAL place, not Atlantis - maybe even a mixture of actual places.
Sorry about the caps, but, come on, Atlantis??

Snicketville you guys. Snicketville. I agree. I mean PJ ruled out Aust. before. It's not France, I wouldn't think. Neither Europe, or anywhere in this universe. But what I did see somewhere was that the name Olaf is German. But that doesn't determine any thing, for instance my mum's name is Julie, and that is sometimes French, yet she's mostly Australian and a tad Irish. My sister's name is Molly, and that's Hewbrew, doesn't mean she's from Arabia. See my point? What I have noticed in Brett's illustations, is that the majority of people have black hair. The Baude.s, the Quagmires, etc. see where I'm going. That could mean they are French, Italian, Greek, there are alot of possibilities. I mean, like I said in another thread about the same thing, you guys missed that Violet was 14 in TBB, too young to get married in Aust., at all. You have to be 16 at the least with parental permission to marry, and 18 to leagally do it yourself.

I agree with everyone who says that it takes place nowhere in particular, except in Snicket's mind. I'm fairly sure there is no place on Earth called "Lousy Lane" or "Village of Fowl Devotees." Or "Heimlich Hospital" or anywhere else. I just think it's some fantasy land Snicket dreamed up.

I think he used pieces of everywhere to make a made-up place. I know that i've said before that I saw things from italy in it, because i'm italian, so i think that everyone from a culture can see things from theirs in the books.

These are all so pretty intresting thoughts. I don't have a clue where they might be set.

I agree. I mean PJ ruled out Aust. before. Umm, when did I do that? I have always been FOR the australia theory. Also, you said it yourself, just cos people have french names like Jacques and Esmé, doesn't mean they are in france. Just cos they have black hair, doesn't mean they come from countries where black hair is more common. Also, those pictures are Brett Helquist's interpretation of what it looks like. It doesn't have to be correct. Also, it can't be in Atlantis or Mu or Lemuria, that's where Spooksville is! (obscure allusion)

Is nobody going to get it through their THICK SKULLS that the series has no official place! Eeerggh, if anyone has bought the interview with Daniel Handler (not the NPR one) on iTunes, the woman asks him where the stories take place and he says on weekdays or summin like that! There is no definite place!

Insulting us doesn't change the fact that the most likely place is Australia. And Handler was just dodging the question, like he always does.

Hold on a second, PJ - you don't actually believe that the series is set in Australia, do you?

Like PJ said before, "I have always been FOR the Australia theory."
It takes place in Snicketville, which is made up of pieces of everything.
