Dear Mr. Snicket,
I am very sorry to report that I arrived too late to make any sketches that might clear you name or provide any information on the survivor or survivors you think may exist. By the time the Official Fire Department allowed me to view the scene, the entire building was more of less destroyed. I tried to sit for a moment and draw some of the objects that lay in the rubble-a glass bottle, portions of a grand piano, a few charred pieces of green wood, the remains of a tea set-but the smoke overwhelmed me and I had to talk across the street, where I made the enclosed drawing...
