The logs were mentioned in the Author's Notes in the Rare Edition. It said something to the effect of, "I did not discover the purpose of these logs for quite some time, when I interviewed some former pupils of Prufrock Preparatory School about their orphaned classmates."
So there is a point to them, but frankly, the Rare Edition notes, in this case, raise more questions than they answer? Which orphans - Baudelaires, Quagmires, or the other set of orphans who I discuss in my thread, Theories Galore? Why would former Prufrock pupils know? And what were the logs used for anyway?

Oh maybe he used them to burn The Quagmire's mansion!
