If uncle monty from TRR and their Aunt from TWW were from VFD then why didn't they recognize Count Olaf right away? Yes I know if they had then there would be no more Series of Unfortunate Events but still. It doesn't make sense that they wouldn't see it or believe the children when they told them. And I don't think they would do it purposely so the children would have to think for themselves because wouldn't that mean putting the Bauds in direct danger? *sigh* why do the adults of The Series of Unfortunate Events have to be so thick headed?

This belongs in Trouble Begins, as it refers to TRR and TWW.
Firstly, V.F.D. is a very big organisation, and not everyone will know everyone else by sight. Secondly, it doesn't look as if Monty or Josephine had been involved in field work for quite a long time (some people don't believe Josephine was in V.F.D. anyway).
I don't believe that Monty and Josephine had seen Olaf for many years - if ever - and Monty certainly won't have expected Olaf to use V.F.D.'s own disguises to sneak his way into their home. He's a very naive person. Since the disguises are, naturally, very good disguises, then even if Olaf's disguise was one they recognised, they might well have passed it off in their minds as an odd coincidence.
Finally, most of the adults in the series aren't very intelligent. They all have severe character flaws which prevent them from seeing the truth. There's a thread where we're discussing that matter; I have to go right now, but if anyone can remember what thread it is, I'd like them to post a link here.

Secondly, it doesn't look as if Monty or Josephine had been involved in field work for quite a long time (some people don't believe Josephine was in V.F.D. anyway). Not so lately. In fact, since the schism, I'd expect everyone to know about Olaf. Though I suppose if the telephone poles have been cut down, communication might have stopped. But we don't know when that was, do we? This belongs in Trouble Begins, as it refers to TRR and TWW. I don't believe that Monty and Josephine had seen Olaf for many years - if ever - and Monty certainly won't have expected Olaf to use V.F.D.'s own disguises to sneak his way into their home. Since the disguises are, naturally, very good disguises, then even if Olaf's disguise was one they recognised, they might well have passed it off in their minds as an odd coincidence. I find it odd that Olaf was able to use VFD's disguises against (former) members. Especially as the kids point out the fact that it is Olaf. The only reasonable explanation is the stupid adults one, and the fact that we don't even KNOW if Josephine and Monty are in VFD for sure.

WERE in VFD, PJ.
And No, I doubt that they are related. I HIGHLY doubt if they were even in VFD for sure. There's not really any way of knowing. (Maybe it will be revealed in Book 13?)
