What makes you put the almost insentient Orlando above the perfectly capable, if wishy-washy, Flo and Tocuna?

What makes you put the almost insentient Orlando above the perfectly capable, if wishy-washy, Flo and Tocuna? He's stronger and more violent. Seriously, though, can there be any other argument in favour of the androgynous person?

Strength is really a rather unwieldy asset. Much better to use cunning, and I'm sure Olaf would agree.
On the other hand, Orlando is absolutely loyal to its master, which is always helpful, and not a bad guard (the capacity in which it has been twice employed.)
I was sorry when it died. I wanted to see more be made of it. Though I suppose it wasn't much fun to write, I would have liked its backstory. I imagine that will never come to light now...

I'm still holding out hope. Even Handler's expressed the possibility that he'll write another book in which he'll tie up loose ends (the androgyne's gender and how Fernald lost his hands were two examples listed, although it seems like the latter will be revealed before the end of the series now). And the androgyne has some vague hope of still being alive, although it would be severely burnt. Its death was very ambiguous; Olaf's associates expressed the hope that he or she might have escaped alive. It's not very likely, though. I've since given up hope of Joesphine, whose death was similarly ambiguous, being alive - although I forget why I thought it was a good idea, now...

I suspect that the Androgyne and the bald man are both really and sincerely dead. In the latter case, there was no escape from the lion pit, and if there was a secret trapdoor in the bottom or some such, someone in the crowd would have noticed("Hey, they're escaping! We're going to miss out on the violence and sloppy eating!")
As for the white-faced ladies, they might eventually come back. Their disappearance was fairly ambiguous, and Lemony admits that he doesn't know if they're dead or alive. I once had a suspicion that they'll turn out to be alive, and help the Baudelaires.

I myself don't believe that the bald man or the androgyne are coming back - I just pointed out that if Handler were to go mad, then he would be able to resurrect the androgyne. Wouldn't make plot sense, though. As for the powder-faced women, I believe that they're alive - although that's entirely personal preference - but I think that they will not be returning (and neither will the question mark).

I believe the clues read that two characters would leave forever...... So unless the sinister duo are forever gone (unlikely) we won't see the sisters again. And of course we will see the question mark again. Or at least, hear about it's back-story somewhere.

Hmmm. I believe the clues read that two characters would leave forever...... It said "Two Will Disappear and Never Be Seen Again". Most believe that it refers to the white-faced women, which makes the most sense. Thanks for reminding me of that.

I'm sorry, but I don't see the point of your post. She seems to be pointing out each character in the Marvellous Marriage picture. Unfortunately, nobody in this topic confused any character for another; we were simply discussing the resemblance between Olaf and the bald man with the long nose.

He does look similar to Count Olaf....but I don't think he's realted. If her were then that would be cool yet weird.
CLUE: Where superhero's face the troubles of the baudelaires. In the section of the opposite of fact.
Sorry that was a clue for the treasure hunt I'm doing.

Oh, my bad. Sorry. BTW, Where was this picture from? TBBRE? Cuz I didn't get that. It wasn't in the book. And in this picture, the bald man looks more like Olaf than OLAF does. Helquist draws him differently, say, in the ex libris, than he does there.

It's from the Bad Beginning Rare Edition, which I highly recommend you order from Amazon, or look for someplace.
And Olaf does look strange in the portrait, because he's seen directly from the front. Someone at another board someplace commented that he looks like a penguin.
