Is it just me, or does it look like Hector a member of V.F.D? In the Unauthorized Autobiography , in a letter that J (jacques) sent to L (lemony) he says something like '...like the self sustaining hoit air balloon that H is always talking about" Coincedence? I THINK NOT! What do you think? Is he a Volunteer?

I think he is, but he should have told the Baudelaire if he knew what V.F.D. stands for, if hes a Volunteer he should, who cares if its classafid information? I surtinly don't.

No, if their own parents would not....
Hector is most likely in VFD, TSS - Count Olaf - Man and lady - Esme - Mention his hot air balloon.. I think they call him a Volunteer.

I hope he's a good guy, though...he's my favorite character and it'd be totally ruined if he were evil....

I'm pretty sure H is in VFD, and somewhere else in TUA, I believe someone says "perhaps with Ike [Josephine's husband] or with Hector." I could be just imagining. Correct me if I'm wrong. Just nicely, please.

If you mean he lives in the Village of Fowl Devotees, then I agree absolutely. If you mean he's a member of a secret organization, there are clues that may be interpreted that way though they are circumstantial at best.
He is an inventor, something that VFD encourages. He has a library, which is a tell-tale of the organization in the series. He is mentioned by initial only by a known member of VFD.
However, I can't recall that he knew what a couplet was and that is also a tell-tale of the organization.
Perhaps he's known to members but is not a member himself?

Hector is definitely in V.F.D. Did you read the transcript in LSUA?

I was just about to make a thread about this.
I personally believe that Hector is a member of bad V.F.D. and him being skittish is all an act. If you think about it, all he had to do was speak up-to save Jacques, and to save the Bauds. But he didn't. Would Olaf rely on that? If Hector had said anything, then it would wreck his plan. Or maybe he said he'd kill Hector if he spoke up or something-but I don't believe that he just decided not to speak, and save the Baudelaires.

Interesting observation on couplets. My guess is that Hector did not recieve complete VFD training. In such a dangerous organization as VFD, few neophytes can properly learn all the codes and secrets. I imagine that VFD training often gets disrupted by such unpleasantries as fires and schisms. The secret library is definitely VFD-related. Also note that VFD trains crows to carry messages. I wonder if Hector started this tradition; I'm working on a VFD carrier-bird theory. Do you think it's significant that Hector has read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland?
