By Lemony I mean Daniel Handler, the writer of the series, as opposed to the character Lemony. Do you think that he had the mystery of VFD planned early in the series, but chose not to introduce it until book 5? Or is he making things up as he goes along? This may be useful to know, as it will help us interpret apparent "VFD clues" from the earlier books.

He was originally going to do four books, so when he decided to carry on from there, he obviously then brought in mysteries.
But I think thats why he wrote TBB:RE, too add clues to that. Are we going to get TRR:RE, TWW:RE and TMM:RE

I was wondering if he'd write rare editions of all the other books, but maybe he'll just do the first four, adding VFD connections where there weren't any at first.

I think he does plan the story out, what with the pasage being discobered in book 6, and his saying the things like Monty wil already be dead by that time. an exact quote: He said you will never come to any harm here in the reptile room, baudelaires, and he was right they weren't the one's who came to harm.

I was thinking this just last night. I think that Handler won't make more than the three or four Rare Editions, because these are the original, non-mystery books, of which he has put in minimal clues. I very much doubt that any RE's after TMM will be written, as it will perhaps overcloud the meanings buried in the books already.

He does plan ahead, to an extent. There's no V.F.D. in the first books because of the whole contract thing that's already been discussed. However, he must have planned something with Beatrice (there was an interesting quote in Book 4, it's in Theories Galore), and Olaf talking about arson in Book 3. Also, at the end of Book 3, he said that Aunt Josephine's life jacket was recovered by fisherman *paraphrasing* at about the time the Baudelaires attended a very unpleasant boarding school.
He's almost certainly got the details of the last two books planned out in full, though. Otherwise he'd be writing himself into quite a corner.

i Don't know that's a good question.... I think he probably plans ahead because when i try to make a book and i go along with the story it turns out sucky. so i have a good feeling he plans ahead.

Absolutely right. You need to have a good idea of what's going to happen in each chapter, preferably written down.

When I'm writing I plan the outline of the story, then the major events of the plot, then add things on as I go along. So Lemony probably does that degree of planning as well.

Most of my stories involve me coming up with a good idea, then either discarding it or typing the start or some basic notes, then discarding it.
But I've had an idea for a story that would basically be an exaggeration of my life. And believe me, there's a lot to exaggerate. I know some real characters, who are already ridiculous people, and exaggeration would only really involve changing their clothes and behaviour a little. All the material's already there, i don't need to make it up.
