Author Sarah Vowell ( whom you may know as the voice of Violet in The Incredibles), has a new book out entitled Assasination Vacation. I noticed the audiobook today, and Daniel Handler contributes a voice. The cast (in order of appearance) is also very interesting, including other authors, a performance artist, actors and even the director of The Incredibles (and from the dual role, he'll probably be trotting out his "Edna" voice): Conan O'Brien: Robert Todd Lincoln Eric Bogosian: John Wilkes Booth Stephen King: President Abraham Lincoln Dave Eggers: Mike Ryan Catherine Keener: Gretchen Worden Jon Stewart: President James A. Garfield Tony Kushner: John Humphrey Noyes Brad Bird: Charles Guiteau & Emma Goldman Daniel Handler: President William McKinley Greg Giraldo: President Theodore Roosevelt David Rakoff: Leon Czolgosz www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0743540050/ref=lpr_g_2/102-7293009-3268947?v=glance&s=books

You had me scared for a second. I thought you meant he was actually going on a trip to kill someone! Instead, he's the one who will be "killed" since McKinley was assassinated in real life.

This sounds intriguing--dead presidents are always interesting. From the only customer review:
"....fun filled romp through the murders of three presidents."
I might be interested in this, and maybe I can convince my parents that it's educational and will help me in history class. And if I get it, I can show it to Ms. L.

It would definitely be educational. Sarah Vowell nearly obsessed with American history (and Lincoln in particular) and all of her work is steeped in it. She may surround Assassination Vacation with a crust of entertainment, but pull that away and it's straight out History and Social Studies. Shhhh...don't tell anyone.

First of all, I found my first evar female heroine in Sarah Vowell. She's dry, witty, knowledgeable, and is friends with my heros. It's a really fun, educutional book, even if the guest voices get one short quote each.

First of all, I found my first evar female heroine in Sarah Vowell... I'm glad you like it. I've been a fan of hers for awhile. She makes regular appeances on the late night talk shows and on NPR's This American Life. "Take the Cannoli" is an interesting collection of essays you may want to check out, and she has a 15 minute video essay on The Incredibles DVD as well.

I'm so glad Jon Stewart gets a lot of speaking bits. I couldn't recognize his voice. I have to listen really closely to hear him, and not him doing James Garfield.

Hope nobody gets mad that I bumped this thread (It's only a month old) but I'm wondering if anyone else has listened to the audio book yet or has opinions/critique to share.
I requested it from my library but when I went to pick it up it was the actual book, not the audio. At first I thought "Shucks, I wanted to hear Handler." Then I thought I would just give it a try.
It is quite an enjoyable book! Sarah goes on her own tour of historic locations dealing with the 3 assassinations. It's written mostly in first person narrative so the audio book must be mostly her speaking. I've only just gotten to McKinley but there hasn't been much of him speaking yet.
Audio book listeners, was it worth it?
