Novelist brings "Adverbs" to big screenDaniel Handler's romantic novel "Adverbs," which chronicles a daisy chain of gay and straight relationships, is being turned into a feature.
Handler ("Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events") will adapt the book for indie firm GreeneStreet Films and "Marie Antoinette" producer Ross Katz.
In the summary, Handler calls it "a novel about love -- a bunch of different people, in and out of different kinds of love."
"It's a wonderful novel with interesting characters and interwoven story lines, which I found impossible to put down," GreeneStreet partner and president John Penotti said.
GreeneStreet and Katz previously collaborated on the Oscar-nominated drama "In the Bedroom."GreeneStreet Takes on Handler's AdverbsGreeneStreet Films has bought "Adverbs," the 2006 novel by Daniel Handler, who writes children books under the Lemony Snicket moniker, reports Variety.
Handler will write the screenplay. Ross Katz, who produced GreeneStreet co-production In the Bedroom as well as current period pic Marie Antoinette, will produce.
The novel is a series of interconnected stories about love, with characters fading in and dropping out of storylines. Each tale is grouped under a different adverb.
The book was published by the Ecco Press, imprint of Snicket publisher HarperCollins.

Whoa, neat. It'll be interesting to see how this develops.

he's done screenplays before, adaptations of others' work. But didn't he get "fired" from adapting his own books for the Lemony Snicket movie from two years ago? I'll be interested to see how this one works out, too.

I like this idea! As I was reading "Adverbs," I envisioned it something like "Love Actually," with different but interconnecting story lines. The only thing I can see a problem with is Handler's idea of different characters with the same name (for example, he hints that the storylines involving "Andrea" may not be the same person). He'd have to make a decision about these characters, because (thank you Captain Obvious), they'd have to be played by the same person if they're the same character.

Or they could do something wacky that could only be done in movie form. Like, I don't know, have them played by the same actress but with different hair/makeup/whatever. I don't know. I'm not that creative. But I'm sure they could come up with something.

Darn, I was going to post this. Anyway. I'm excited, of course, but I have to remember the rumours going around several years ago the The Basic Eight was going to be a film. However, that rumour was based on one line in a Snicket biography (which is in the first thread linked below). Of course, the sources on this are much more creditable. Nothing has been posted on imdb.com yet. TB8 - Movie? TB8 Cast List.

Like, I don't know, have them played by the same actress but with different hair/makeup/whatever. Or a different actress with exactly the same hair and makeup... or something. I don't know. It'll be interesting to see how they deal with that. Dear Dairy, my first reaction when I read this was "that movie would be like Love Actually's evil twin." I'm glad I'm not the only person to think of that.

So, which actors/actresses would people like to play the characters? Would you want big-name stars or unknowns? I haven't really thought about this much, but I've always pictured Helena as a Helena Bonham Carter type. She's British! (Note: the pictures of her are not very good.) I'd rather Adverbs be a movie full of unknowns, but Helena Bonham Carter is kind of a big name. *shrug* I really hope Handler makes a cameo. Edit: Adverbs has its own IMDB page now. It's set for release in 2009. Handler is listed with both screenplay and novel (of course) credits. imdb.com/title/tt0897333/

I'd actually like to see some big name stars, simply because big names will draw viewers. I'd like for the movie to be good AND successful, an art-house film style with blockbuster viewership. Like "Crash," for example.

What? Oh, Adverbs wasn't really the novel of his I wanted, but this is fantastic! I hope it's a hit.
