I attended a book signing with Mr. Handler/Snicket this past weekend. I teach 3rd graders and asked him about Beatrice. I told him my 3rd graders always ask , "Who is Beatrice?" He asked me, "What do you tell them?" I said that I was going to ask him for an answer. His exact response was this :
"Tell them just because Beatrice is one name, doesn't necessarily mean it's only one person."
Take it for what it's worth.

What? It doesn't seem like Handler, or any other author if that to give away a major clue like that in an interview. Until I get proper evidence of this, in my mind I'm dismissing the idea because it seems to obscure. I mean Beatrice is a name, how can it represent a whole group of people? And everything said about her, refers to her as a single person.

I'm rather sceptical as well, although it wouldn't be altogether too unbelievable for there to be more than Beatrice.

What? It doesn't seem like Handler, or any other author if that to give away a major clue like that in an interview. I agree--if this clue is valid, it'd be a huge revelation.(And it's so late in the series that anything like that would seem almost gimmicky.) It's not impossible that there's more than one Beatrice, but I'm inclined to doubt it. There's nothing in the books that points toward this sort of thing, really; every reference to Beatrice seems to point toward the same person. So this may have been a red herring on Handler's part. (Especially if the event took place on April 1st; you said it was this past weekend.)

So, it's probably that he threw you all a red herring there.

This is certainly interesting - a possibility that I haven't considered. If this phrase is valid - which it may or may not be - it certainly would open some windows and close some doors on Beatrice's true identity/ies. Assuming that this is true, who do you think that the Beatrices might be? One possibility is that it is the name of a disguise -similar to the Captain Sham theory - a theory posed here and here.

If this were true, if all the strong arguments against this theory were dismissed, then the only group of people who I can imagine could possibly be Beatrice are the Baudelaire Orphans. This is only because of the "Beatrice Baudelaire" clue and it would be kind of ironic because Beatrice means "bringer of joy" where as wherever the Baudealires went woe would follow.

I'm glad this has generated some discussion. It is very possible that he threw us a red herring. I do have to say that since he was talking to all adults at the time and there were no children present that he stayed out of character most of the time. It does make one wonder though doesn't it?
I also asked him if he planned on revealing his face at any point throughout the books. His reply to this was, "Would you show a face this ugly in public?"

"Would you show a face this ugly in public?" This reminds me of an old story about Abraham Lincoln. When accused of being two-faced by an opponent, he asked "If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?"

He must sit around in his spare time, coming up with witty retorts for all the silly and probing questions he receives from his fans.

I know; I've thought that many a time. Or it could be improvised, which is why so much of what he says is very enigmatic and often completely irrelevant.

You could, if you'll only get your wish from the wish corruptor thread. Sadly, I don't provide links.
I wonder if Snicket replies randomly, or anything is memorized *feels stupid*
