(From LSTUA, p46) O: Take a look at this! (Gasps from quite a few people) L: Egad! M: Put that back in its box immediately!
Iv'e always wondered what exactly was in that box. As I finished reading TPP, it dawned on me: Medusoid Mycelium. I say this as the other time it's in a persons possesion (during TGG/TPP) the Medusoid Mycelium it is safely contained within the diver's helmet. Also, there seems to be little else that causes as much panic as the Medusoid Mycelium.
Sorry if this seems too vague or if it's already been said.

*facepalm* I never thought of that. I always thought it was a match or something.
On second thought, it wouldn't work unless TGG happened first. Remember, he didn't know what the Mycelium was in TGG.

My impression of the VFD transcript was that this meeting took place sometime in the past, and hence Olaf wouldn't have had the Mycelium. Also, there's an interview in which Snicket states that he intended it to be most likely a match or a lighter. (Scroll down to question 25.)

Awww well that's not nearly as interesting as medusoid myselium. I mean it sounds a bit weird if the VFD members are shocked to see Olaf is equipped with a lighter.

After reading that Chapter, I guess they would be scared by a lighter. If you remember the title of that chapter is something along the lines of "Why was this buliding burnt down?" and a picture of a buliding is shown - 99% sure that this is where the meeting takes place. The buliding was obiviously one of the last safe places and they didn't want Olaf to burnt it down. Which he did anyway. I wish it went on for a little longer so you could find out his demands.

I wish it went on for a little longer so you could find out his demands. Maybe the final add-on book that explains everything will contain a chapter with all the stuff like that, entitled "FOR NOSEY PEOPLE".

Ya, that sounds like something Snicket would do, and I for one hope he does.

Who would have thought that an arsonist would carry a device for generating fire? E: Yeah, alert the press! M: (sulkily) No need to get so snippy.

It wouldn't seem shocking to us, but we've only known Olaf as a villain and arsonist. At the time, he might only just have changed sides, or the full extent of his villainy might not have been known. And a group of people who love books and other flammable things would naturally be troubled by somebody they distrust pulling out a match or lighter in their headquarters.

Dear Readers,
Would it be hard for Olaf to catch the building on fire? He would have to be near something flammable like curtains. I doubt he would just drop it on the floor.

Dear Readers, Would it be hard for Olaf to catch the building on fire? He would have to be near something flammable like curtains. I doubt he would just drop it on the floor. It would be really easy. VFD headquarters are made of wood and have a lot of paper in them. And since no one in VFD seems to want to hit him, they'll probably just have to stand there and tell him not to it as the flames race across the building.

I am sure they would attempt to extinguish the fire.
