In the Unauthorized Autobiography. For the chapter with parts of books in it. Looking up a title or something from that chaper in the index gives you a page number usually off by one or two. Maybe there was supposed to be more or less in the chapter? Discuss, unless if you already have. Sorry if this has been mentioned. I need to go, but can be more specific with the actual pages and such later.

I remember there being a thread on this, or I at least remember noticing it myself and mentioning it. A couple searches on "index" apparently doesn't turn up the thread. I think my own theory on it was that the index was rearranged prior to publication for some reason, but nobody thought to update the index. Kinda like that one Sebald letter in the autobiography where the code is slightly off because somebody made "sugar bowl" into one word instead of two. Hm, thinking about the two Poe excerpts, there might even have been intended to be some complex Sebald code in that section. That might be something to investigate on a rainy day.

I was going to write down all the mistakes, but there's so many! So far everything related to that chapter in the index has the wrong pages, except for some book titles which are in fact on page 131 but that isn't even part of the mysterious chapter. Perhaps instead of listing all the mistakes I'll write out some basic patterns I found. *goes to grab book* So its Chaper TEN I'm writing of. so: Patterns Bad Beginning - off by one Ivan Lach. - off by one Ramona - off by one In Auction - off by one Up until now there is an obvious pattern. By the way these titles are in the order as presented in the chapter, and I'm obviously abbreviating some titles. I Lost Something at Movies - off by six Wow, weird. Going on... The Reptile Room - off by two Mambu du Mal - off by two The Tree Languages - off by two Now we start to get two parts of books on one page, will this affect it? Little House Big Woods AND Nine stories - off by two, off by two The Bells AND Lumbermill History - off by two, off by two Spoiled Brat Press - off by two Charlottles Web - off by two Green Mansions AND The Bells again - off by two, off by two The Littlest Elf - off by two
So we can analyze this as we'd like and find other patterns...
EDIT: Rereading this post, I guess I actually did write out all the mistakes. ;D Hehe

It looks to me like that chapter was rearranged someplace in the publishing process, and the index wasn't fixed to keep up with it. Apparently "I Lost Something At the Movies" was moved, and everything else shifted accordingly. Like that Sebald Code/sugar bowl mistake Dante mentioned, it could be the result of careless editing.
Any Sebald code in this chapter would probably be limited to the made-up books, those that only exist in the Snicket world-- Ivan Lachrymose, the auction catalog, I Lost Something, The Mamba Du Mal, Lumbermill History, Carmelita's book, and The Littlest Elf. The original plan(that of the fictional Snicket) may have been for those to fall between the Bells excerpts, or so that the "ringy" stuff in The Littlest Elf lined up properly.
