Well, this is my theory on a possible relationship between Beatrice and Olaf. Please note that most of it was forumlated from what I remember from Unauthorized Autobiography and the Beatrice Letters, as I do not have the book no person to back up my claims. If I get an ydetails wrong, please aware me so I can perfect the theory.
My idea is that Beatrice (Beatrice, i nthis theory, wil lrefer solely to Beatrice #1) was, as Lemony Snicket said, a theatre major, as was Count Olaf, as it has been mentioend since Book 1 that he was an actor (this seems to contradict the fact that Olaf was in class with Lemony ratehr than with Beatrice in her acting class ,but it is possible that Olaf and Beatrice simply had their theatrical trainign at seperate times, or that Olaf switched his V.F.D. "major" or something...). So, fast forward to Lemony Snicket's career as a theater critic for the Punctilio (a job he no doubt picked for correspondence with Beatrice). Snicket mentions goign to see a play Beatrice is in and her dropping a pin as a signal that it was safe to meet her. There is no doubt in my mind that Olaf was in that play with her (I believe there is an article where Snicket reviews that same play in UA and he mentions Olaf, though I may be wrong or it could be a different play...)
SO my theory is, Beatrice "fell in love" with Olaf during one of the plays they put o ntogether and she dated him behind Lemony's back, sicne it was clear in her mind that Lemony considered her as a sort of girlfriend. However, in the end, Olaf is revealed to have selfish motives behind his pursuit of beatrice as a wife (perhaps, if beatrice is Mr. Baudelaire's sister as I suspect, he is after the Baudelaire fortune or maybe revenge on the Baudelaire family for killing his parents, f that has happened at this point i nthe timeline already) and Beatrice is forced to flee.
Around this time, Lemony mails her a proposal to her, and she sends him a 200-page explenation/apology about her horrid experiences with Olaf. This would definitely explain why Beatrice asked him question #9 in her 200-page novella, something alogn the liens of "Do you still love me?" Under the circumstances, Beatrice might have expected Lemony to be mad that she had relatiosn with Olaf behidn his back. But Lemony's love was pure enoug hto see past this fault, as we see in his VERY long answer.
Well, this is only a theory. Discuss!
