I don't understand why the idea that Olaf and Esme started the schism is so popular. Despite the idea that the transcript in the UA is of the evenst that triggered the schism (a theory that I think PJ firmly debunks here: asoue.proboards11.com/index.cgi?board=conjectures&action=display&thread=1129749086), there is no evidence to support this. In my eyes, Olaf and Esme have always been pawns in the big picture and the ongoing saga of V.F.D. (although it is apparent they hold much more importance in the smaller, connected stories of the Baudelaires and the Snickets). As evidenced by the aura of forboding let off by TMWABBNH and TWWHBNB, there are people much more evil that Olaf and his acting troupe. So, now that Olaf and Esme are otu of the way - what exactly DID trigger the schism? I have found little to no evidence on this subject, which is odd, because I consider it a very important piece of the puzzle of V.F.D. and ASOUE. And also, do we have a definitive chart of V.F.D. members and what side of the schism they're on? Do you think there's a possibility for traitors or double agents (or perhaps last-minute conversions in Book the Thirteenth)? Discuss.

I doubt a definitive list can be made, because even the members may not be sure. (The continual question "Are you who I think you are?" in TPP demonstrates this).
I prefer theories that imagine a gradual corruption in the V.F,D. over decades that finally became an open break. One example of this corruption is that the MWBANH and the WWHANB said they had an infant slave before the schism.

They were probably evil (TMWHBNB and WWHBNB) for quite some time, as were Olaf's parents, probably. They probably had something to do with the schism, too. I also thought that "E" from the transcript could be Ernest, but then I reread TPP and realized that he would be four years old when this happened. Of course, the transcript could be something else entierely.

I think that in the transcript, the E character was not Esme, but Eleanora Poe. In UA, it is proven that she is evil.

I rather felt that her telegram to her brother proved that she was instead very misguided.
