I'm not sure if this deserves its own thread, but I would like to discuss the ring that Beatrice returned to Lemony.
The ring apparently is the one passed to "R" as the new Duchess of Winnipeg from her deaf mother.
In BB to LS #3, Beatrice, (the younger), tells of trading a ring "emblazoned with the initial of someone I believe you [Lemony] once knew", for a yak ride.
Is this the same ring? If so, how did it come to be possessed by BB2?
Lemony tells Beatrice (LS to BB #5) that "I'm certain she [R] would have wanted you to keep it". Did Lemony return the ring to Beatrice? If so, did Beatrice then pass it on to BB2, as a mother might pass a keepsake on to her daughter?
However, in the same letter (LS to BB #5), he says that the ring , (and all traces of their love), will be scattered. Perhaps BB2 came upon the ring in the course of her investigations.
Comments? Speculation? Rootbeer Floats anyone?

Ooh, what if Beatrice 2 is the imposter that took the Duchess's place, and that is how she got the ring? Probably not, sorry, I'm not thinking very clearly.
I think that the ring the woman on the front of TUA is the same one mentioned here.

Beatrice 2 seems to have a great deal of inside information about Lemony's old letters to Beatrice 1. She quotes and refers to them constantly. She may have gotten them after her raid on Lemony's office in BB to LS #2, but even in BB to LS #1 she quotes Lemony's telegram about the long distance being troublesome.
I think she does all this quoting to try to establish her bona-fides with the suspicious Lemony, but it make me more suspicious of her.

Yes, I would love a root beer float, thank you.

Well, I certainly wouldn't. (By "they" I assume you mean the mother and not the former boyfriend.) It would be disrespectful to one's husband to do that.
If gifts from former boyfriends were passed on as part of a woman's estate after her death, those items surely wouldn't have symbolic or sentimental value for the daughter. Now that I think of it, though, BB2 gave the ring to a guy in exchange for a yak ride, so it apparently didn't mean much to her. Hm. There are many sides to every situation. Nothing is clear.
So where's my root beer float?

If gifts from former boyfriends were passed on as part of a woman's estate after her death.... Passed on in an estate, or sifted from the ashes of a burned out building? Silly me, I left it over in the Anagram thread!

Could the ring be a signet ring? The Duchess leaves an R smudge(?) at the bottom of eatch of her letters in TUA.

(Spoilers About The End)
We now know that the Baud's Mother, Beatrice, had gotten the ring and left it on the island with Ishmael. Then, the Baud's got it and give it to Beatrice 2, or Beatrice Snicket Baudelaire.

No. It was passed down through the lines of Duchesses of Winnipeg, the last of whom (R.) joined V.F.D. and gave it to Lemony, who gave it to Beatrice as an engagement ring, who gave it back to Lemony, who gave it to Kit, who gave it to Bertrand, who gave it to Beatrice when they were married. She kept it in a box that could only be opened by a key kept in a box that could only be opened by a code taught by the Snicket grandfather. The box was destroyed in the Baudelaire fire and the ring was recovered by Captain Widdershins, who lost it in a storm at sea, where it washed up on the island and was recovered by Ishmael, who gave it to Violet who gave it to Beatrice.

I think that Ishmael dropped the ring in the water, ink came back and gave it to Beatrice the Younger, and that is how it came into her possesion. Because if "Ish" had given Violet the ring, she would'v ementioned it to her siblings.

He put the book down on the reading chair, and put the ring in Violet's hand. Page 231
At the mention of Kit's brothers, Violet thought to reach into her pocket, and she retrieved the ornate ring, emblazoned with the initial R. ... "Its history began before we were born," Kit said, "and it should continue after we die. Give it to my child, Baudelaires. Let my child be part of my history, even if the baby is an orphan, and all alone in the world." Page 308
