There is an author tracker note that says TBL contains a "coded sonnet." After all this time, I hoped we would make more progress in decoding it. If not us, who could?
Suppose it is a word-skipping code like Sebald but with a different pattern. For example, suppose it tries to answer Lemony's question: Are you certain your co-star is one of us? "brae...not..one" can be found with a skip of 3, then 11. The 3rd and 11th alphabet letters are C and K, which are both punch-out letters. Can this pattern be extended to form a message, or is it a coincidence?

I assume that AuthorTracker was overhyping it; it only mentioned a coded sonnet once (and that was two months before the publication date, too), and its page on LemonySnicket.com mentions "hidden compartments," which is certainly an exaggeration. I think it's only coded in the sense that it creates a multi-layered metafictional message that blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction within the fiction itself, and the hidden message is the way the lines of the sonnet also mirror the book's events (or something like your theory here, which I subscribe to a form of).
