J: I'm going to regret writing this because it sounds weird. But I've been thinking-- C: Things that you need to be high to understand. J: Shut up, dog. Anyway, I've been thinking:what makes a person? Is the body just a possesion in which a soul is contained? And wherein lies the soul? In the stuff we say and do and think? C: See? I'm telling you, there's drugs in the air.

I'm confused by that too. People often think the brain and mind(soul) are the same, but in my opinion the mind/soul is a separate entity. The soul is made of ether, spirit-matter. It is our consciousness, our personality. It cannot be seen or weighed. Do I sound like a New Age weirdo or what?

C: ...are you kidding? Listen to J. Feel free to sound like a New Age weirdo here, man. J: You know what else confuses me? Names. Names are supposed to be You, but there could be millions of Yous. And there's other things about Names that I can't put into words.

Your name is just a label of sorts, but one closely attached to you. I know that many people share my first, last, and/or possibly middle names. And I have many names, most of which I'm too paranoid to tell my cyberfriends. It is hard to put such things into words.

Names are often people...I know a lot of folks whom I could never call by any other name, simply because it fits them so well. Since in my opinon there is no seperation between mind, soul, and body, I feel that the body can often shape who a person is. I probably would not be who I was today if I was buff and strong.

Is it because you were raised non-buffly, not treated as someone buff and strong and jock-like, and therefore adopted non-buff mannerisms, or is it because your personality came first and you being buff doesn't fit it? Am I making sense? Anyway, J, they're not weird questions. Philosophers have been asking themselves the same things for centuries... "Do we have souls?", "How are we different from other people?", "Are we different at all?", "What makes a person what they are?", etc. Personally, I like to believe that people are more than the sum of their parts... not sure why. The thing that bugs me is that people are so different, and yet so similar at the same time... I mean, we're all basically the same, but we have little differences, and we grow up thinking we're special... but I don't know if we actually are. I'll never get things to make sense.

No one is unique. We have some shallow differences, like favorite movies, and whatnot, but we're all a version of some sort of streotype.

Really? I've almost never been able to fit a template to myself or most of my friends...

What are people's common preconceptions of fifteen-year-old girls who are currently wearing at least one black item of clothing? Do share your ideas. Let's see if you describe me. We could make a game of this.

J: Sorry. I'm jaded. In my school, there are three types of people: girls, boys and freaks. The girls are the streotypical cheerleader giddy type, and the boys are violent and rude and whatnot, and the freaks don't fit into either group, and I'm the only one. So, I hope you can see what I think that. People on the web are a lot more interesting. Perhaps it's because there's no filter. Like, everyone is thrown itno a school, regardless of likes and dislikes, and on message boards, you select something you like and you relate to toher people because they like at least one of the same thing.

I think that people on the net are more interesting because they don't know you, and you don't know them, so they wont be judged. So they can say and do things that they would normally be called a freak, or looser for.
but i think the body n sould r 2 separate things.

Online, you have the freedom to really be yourself, or something very like yourself. No one really knows who you are. For instance, I am notably reluctant to speak of my religion in real life, but I've said a lot about it online. This may have something to do with living in a predominantly Christian town(I'm Wiccan).

Yeah, interesting what kind of things come out, online. I think I'm a lot more outgoing, actually (I'm slightly shy in a weird way, I guess, because once you know me or I'm not afraid of being judged by you, I'm completely talkative and the like), and there are certain things I'll speak up more about. It's weird how that works.
Although what I meant, earlier, about the people being the same, wasn't actually about stereotypes, more about the fact that we're all basically the same when we're born and we grow up to have slight differences but those all depend on how we've lived, so.... are we different because we're really supposed to be different, or different because of our circumstances?

Everything is in your brain. You soul is simply the way your brain makes you think feel etc.

We all have different genes when we're born, so there are differences from Day 1. Even identical twins have different fingerprints. But I'm not sure how much genes influence personality. Certainly, they influence appearance, which can affect how you're treated and ultimately how you act. Genes control hormone output, which affects your moods. But the question is if they really control who you are.
