6 people dead is a tragedy. 6 million is a statistic. I agree. With 6 people, you can picture those 6 people. You probably have them described. You can feel for each of them a little bit. But 6 million? "Oh look people are dead in China... ho hum." And though it's a tragedy to everyone who remotely knew even one of those 6 million people, no one else really takes notice, because it's on such a big scale: you can't even begin to feel for one of them. Well... unless it affects you...

That's really strange. Anyway, a little graphic I created to symbolize our place in the cosmos. The text says "you are here"; it came out too small somehow. 200 points and a cookie for the reference.

If that stands for "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", here's your cookie. And your 200 points, which are'nt edible but carry a certain prestige.

god is lord and he made all of us special one day every tongue will confess u r god........ i'm tempted to call this suggestive... or to say in response to "and he made you extra special..." but i can't really be bothered he's been bashed enough for this ocmment already...once mroe won't really matter either way...someone else can say these if they want

god is lord and he made all of us special one day every tongue will confess u r god........ There's really nothing I can say to this that hasn't been said in here before, except that I'm having real difficulty parsing that last sentence. My tongue is god? (PS: To be fair, we have some very intelligent Christians here, such as Celinra.)

M: And this, class, is why Christians are stereotyped as stupid. True. But Celinra's........smart. And she has proper grammer AND she's one of those SMART members...... "My tongue is god?" Ha ha ha ha ha! Which makes me thinks of this storyw here Krishna has some dirt in his mouth and when his mum opens his motuh she sees the world and understands that he is god. If I were his mum, I'd freak out and brush his teeth.

like.........someone said (i can't be bothered going back to see who said it) but we're significant to each other but not to the 'earth'. if one person dies, sure, it's a big issue for our friends and families, but on the whole, people in....asia eg. aren't gonna care if someone in australia dies are they? but i guess it also depends on the circumstances of our deaths. If some little boy or girl are raped and murdered, it's gonna be all over the news, and most likely, other countries will hear about it, or if someone died of a new disease or cancer, then it's gonna be on the news in other countries, and then scientists are gonna need to test what happened, etc. so in some cases, we are significant to the whole world, and in some we're only significant to those who know us, or know 'of' us.

Well if one teeny tiny insect is important, in a '"web of inter-connectedness", on this vast earth then why wouldn't a mircoscopic planet's inhabitants be important in this colossal universe? M: I meant...us, personally, on this planet. Endy: If we just...died, nothing would happen to the solar system. M: But if the PLANET were to suddenly cease to exist, well, that's on a different scale. The solar system would be affected, the moon would crash into another planet or something, etc. This would only affect the solar system. It's effects would be minute, but there. Endy: If the solar system were to disappear, then the galaxy might be tipped slightly out of balance. The effects, again, would be tiny, but there. M: This just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Basically, it depends what scale you're looking at. Endy: If that made no sense, blame the summer. It let my brain go all mushy... True. But Celinra's........smart. And she has proper grammer AND she's one of those SMART members......M: I know. I did say 'stereotyped'...
