I don't think many people would say Ishmael was a better person than Friday, but Friday hasn't had much opportunity to make any mistakes (certainly not such dreadful ones as Ishmael did), and Ishmael seems to have had quite an interesting life. You could write a book about Ishmael's past easily, but all you could write about Friday is her future.
