So, we all now know how this series ended-but how did the whole thing start? how did vfd become so serious? and more importantly, HOW DID OLAF FIND OUT THAT THE BAUDELAIRES WERE SO RICH?]
well, i have a theory.
Q> HOW DID SNICKET BECOME INVOLVED?
in Lemony Snicket the unthourised biography, there is a poem about the "little snicket lad" which as we all know, is lemony snicket. In part of the poem, it says that (not actual quote) people grabbed snicket by the ankles where his mark was to be made, but then they dropped him, and he tried to crawl away. as we all know, all people in VFD have a tatoo of an eye on their left ankle, so this may suggest that snicket was in VFD ever since he was a little boy.
Q>HOW DID OLAF GET INVOLVED?
Well, on lemonysnicket.com, they had a family tree of the snicket family (except they only showed the first inital of their first name), and on one part of the tree there is the inital "o"
this suggests that olaf may be realted to snicket.

ummm.... remember count olaf has an eye and he is no longer apart of vfd .. if olaf was related to snickets wouldnt lemony say my cousin olaf or my ucle olaf ...

but how did the whole thing start? Depends on how you define "start." With the assassination of Olaf's parents by the Baudelaire parents, perhaps? Or the theft of a certain sugar bowl? Or with the schism? Beginnings and ends are rarely clear-cut. Well, they were a public organisation before the schism, but afterwards, I imagine the numerous arson attacks on homes, headquarters and libraries rather forced them to get tough and form an organised resistance and underground movement. For one thing, Olaf was in V.F.D. with the Baudelaires, and for another, the Baudelaires lived in an enormous mansion in the middle of the city and threw regular dinner parties. That they're rich can't exactly have been a huge secret. (Indeed, there are even suggestions in the short story The Dismal Dinner that Olaf spied on one of these dinner parties (the fourth-to-last).) Correct. As far as we know, all V.F.D. members are recruited (with their parents' permission) when they are very young children, and indeed are given their tattoo at that age (a practice abandoned since the schism, however). Some have suggested that the Family Tree is not a literal family tree; for example, that it shows connections within V.F.D. I don't see a problem with it being an actual family tree, though, and I also don't think Lemony would have any particular reason to make his own relation to Olaf explicit anywhere in the books. It isn't a thing which particularly matters to the story - what more matters, mattered all along, is that Olaf was distantly related to the Baudelaires. |

ummm.... remember count olaf has an eye and he is no longer apart of vfd .. if olaf was related to snickets wouldnt lemony say my cousin olaf or my ucle olaf ... but ur forgetting something. all vfd-ers have an eye on their left ankle-if count olaf was once a member of vfd, then it would make sense of why olaf has an eye on his left ankle. as for the relation bit-im not so sure. ..but one thing for sure- the suspense is kiling me! |

the reason the baudliers house was burned is so they could join VFD (the evil people wanted them) they burn your house killing your siblings and parents then drag you off and tattoo your ankle (that is what they used to do)

those are all good answers. but could it be possible that the letters that supposedly stand for their 1st names are actually in code so that possible enemies couldnt make certain family connections to others.

fut jaques had an eye tatoo and he want a schimer ... ( if you choose to call it that) i htink the eye is on old vfd male tradition

Not just men. Kit had the tattoo, too. It was standard practice for volunteers to have the tattoo before the schism - afterwards, they realised that it was unwise to mark oneself with a symbol when the meaning of that symbol may change at any time (according to the U.A.).
