Nobody here is being insensitive. I make jokes about my age myself, so why shouldn't others? Anyway I'm not old old, just old compared with the norm on this forum. (And I certainly wouldn't expect a student to say LOL in an essay -there's a time and a place for everything.)

I do think it's a bit odd saying LOL in speech, since there people can actually hear you laughing. Online it's different.
