the nostalgia thing is mostly just in the soundtrack. of course, costume and set design are very much immersed in the 70s setting, too. i think it's actually pretty close to "Boogie nights" in terms of its atmosphere, minus the latter's dark underbelly. the story is surprisingly wholesome compared to PTA's last four movies, and is - perhaps as a result - a bit less formally adventurous. it has moments i can easily imagine you scoffing at. what i liked most about it was the acting, some of the set pieces (whole Bradley Cooper episode; ending of of Benny Safdie storyline; less so Sean Penn/motorcycle scene), and the way it captures a universal, but generally culturally undefined experience of a romantically charged but unconsummated long-term relationship between two young people. it's very nuanced in that regard while also entertaining. i finally caught this, on an airplane, lol. i enjoyed it much more than i expected, especially in its lack of that creepy edge that most PTA flicks have. the bradley cooper episode was definitely the most entertaining tangent. the Sean Penn/Tom Waits salsa was, i thought, immensely indulgent. i had no idea how old the girl was, so i was quite confused by the main conflict (the age gap thing) until at least halfway through, when she says "i'm 25." then i was like, oh, of course you shouldn't go out with him then, and i kinda checked out after that. the trajectory of the romance seemed very old-fashioned and traditional hollywood to me, where (especially in romcoms) the two leads don't get together till the very end, but i guess the coming-of-age element makes it slightly more nuanced. also i just learned two minutes ago that the girl is from HAIM and the boy is PSH's son. whoa....... also why the h*ck is it called licorice pizza ??

"Brick" (2005) with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. My sister popped it on her laptop and was ignoring the film in it's entirety so I popped on some french subtitles and tried to decipher whatever they were mumbling about. A very odd film about lots of things and nothing all at once.

just noticed for the first time the movies named on the first page of this thread, and now I’m tempted to make a list of every movie mentioned in here……. well, i'm ashamed to say i actually did it. letterboxd.com/julianblower/list/the-last-movie-you-watched-thread/no, i don't have a job, why do you ask? i think the most frequently mentioned movie might have been Pixar's UP. there was one person who watched National Treasure (2004) about ten times. the award for most-posts-in-this-thread-without-ever-actually-watching-movies has to go to mister m. i skipped the one post i made that had about 70 films in it.
