Ive read all the books in the series....and I cant find were it tells you what vfd means.

Can any tell me if Lemony snicket even says what it stands for in the book?

It's not just that he doesn't deny it; he positively confirms that VFD was originally a Fire Department, though it expanded into other areas; and that makes it very probable that Quigley was right, and that that is what the initials stand for. (Perhaps Handler would have made it a bit more explicit if he had realised how puzzled fans were about it.)

The views of some people at the time was that, because Widdershins confirmed that V.F.D. "started" as a fire department but expanded, it therefore was not technically a fire department at the time of TGG. I recall threads to the effect of "Is this the end of V.F.D. = Volunteer Fire Department?"

Well, many organisations do keep their name even when their function changes. But in any case, I've noticed that Kit in TPP says that the job of VFD was to put out fires 'both literally and figuratively'. This would suggest that its other work could still be seen as part of its function as a fire department

the books gave a lot of v.f.d initials but i looked closer and only found nothing that would help find wat it means. They might be a very good secret organization to not know wat it is.

heyy i am new to this message thing but not to the series. i have been a fan most of my life and part of VFD since '99. im a major fan of ASOUE. I know a lot of things about lemony snicket and the series... not a stalker though lol jk. well at least i dont think i am.

when i read all the books i wrote down some of the meanings in order to narrow it down later on... i still believe that it is volunteer fire department

Guys, like Dante said, Snicket confirms on page 317 of The End that it's Volunteer Fire Department. He outright says it; "...the children had investigated the Volunteer Fire Department..." in reference to V.F.D.
