What else could it be besides Volunteer Fire Department?

I always wanted it to be Volunteer Fire Detectives before TE came out. Ah, I remember the intense speculation...good times, good times.

When Quigily annonced his speculation in TSS, I agreed it would have been Volunteer Fire something. Detectives might have actually fit better, I think. (That is, before TE came out and answered one of thousand questions)

I don't think it would have been very dramatic, however, to change just a single word to something that in practice isn't all that different. Volunteer Fire Detectives wouldn't have the real-world resonance of Volunteer Fire Department, and it also wouldn't shed any new light on V.F.D.

What else could it be besides Volunteer Fire Department? I think it's easy to say that now... when did we first guess it might be Volunteer Fire Department? THH, TCC-ish? Unless I have a dreadful memory it was definitely before the entire name was suggested in any of the books...

Well, since volunteer fire departments are real, I remember some people saying that they'd been wondering about that particular expansion ever since TAA. TVV, by adding "Volunteer," would have really boosted the theory, and the emphasis on fire in the whole "Dilemma Deepens" arc would really have transformed it into the top runner.

I like to think of VFD in real world senses: what if it was a group of anti-war protestors in the 60's who were...just hippies? Or what if they were Allied supporters in the 40's and the schism was caused because some were Axis sympathizers? Maybe they were druggies and the entire serious viewpoint portrayed in Lemony's universe was just a narrow view not shared by any one else, and everyone else thought they were crazies and radicals.
Just something I like to ponder in Algebra I. ;D

I think you can probably draw links to all those movements if you consider that aSoUE has its philosophical connections to the real world.
