Really? I always thought Snicket just threw in the 'please' in there to make it sound weird. Never knew it really existed..

I'm fairly confident Handler was just parodying poor feigned accents and their tendency to work in fiction despite being obviously false - perhaps he's also playing straight, by having characters comment on it, a need to grossly play up such feigned accents in fiction to signify that it is indeed an accent different to the norm. Perhaps you could provide more information on the link you've drawn between the word "please" and the language spoken in Nepal?
And while I'm at it, I imagine this is a matter for The Situation Worsens, since the fake accent was first used in TEE.

That "please" accent and the way Gunther spoke...I always laugh at it. Because there are people who talk like that where I come from -- some with even worst "accents". Not everyone can speak English here, so yeah.

Yes, I've heard it too! My second cousin sort of talks like that.

In my ficverse, Count Olaf was born and raised in Sweden. He learnt to speak fluent English when he was very young, presumably. So I think he's taking the mick out of his own native accent. (He developed an uncanny Boston accent in order to fit in at primary school when he first moved to the US.)
Not that I've ever heard a Swedish accent before *shifty eyes*

Bear in mind that Lulu speaks like that as well. I've always supposed Olaf got it off her, as she must have been carrying on her pretence for several years, while he only adopts the 'Gunther' character on one occasion. (Though perhaps he's been doing it once a year for some time - I'm not sure if that's ever made clear.).

I think it could be a standard Voice Fakery Disguise. Although of course we know very little about those.

I think it is a part of VFD because Olaf and Olivia were both VFD members...it just makes sense.
