Bertrand wasn't quite sure how to respond to that. Then again, things already seemed to already be so topsy-turvy he couldn't say he was very surprised. "I don't know of any schism," he said. "And the only fires that occur are the ones that the entire oganization works together to distinguish." "The Hotel Denouement?" Geraldine asked. "Isn't that the hotel located not fifty miles from here?" [My computer is still acting up, so I'm typing this from my mother's. Until mine is fixed, I can't guarantee I'll be able to post as much as I did before, but I'll do my best. ]

"Great Scott!" gasped Doc, as he could hardly believe what he heard. "Say, is the... Well, by any chance, is the Hotel Denouement still standing?"
He also wanted to ask for the year, but decided against it. Since Geraldine and Beatrice seemed to know who Led Zeppelin was, though - he figured that it it had to be, at least, 1969. Also, they didn't appear to react strangely to the mention of 1982.
He then recalled Bertrand's reaction to the mention of Count Olaf - and he began to wonder if, somehow, he ended up in a different world. If the year was the same, though - and, yet, certain people were younger... It seemed to be quite hard for him to grasp.
OOC: That's fine! I understand all about computer problems.

Doc’s outburst caused both Bertrand and Geraldine to jump, and the two teenagers looked at each other incredulously. “Well, of course,” Bertrand clarified. “I— along with some of the other student interns at the Training School —are in the process of organizing a field trip to the hotel, to attend a V.F.D. meeting. Normally, no one under the age of eighteen is admitted, but Lemony, Jacques and I have managed to pull some strings with several senior members.” [Thanks, Quags. Yeah, it looks as though my computer access will be cut in half for the next couple of days to give my laptop time to dry out. But I’ll still be on at night. ]

"That sounds, uh, interesting," Doc replied, nervously. Realizing something, he asked, "I just noticed your mentions of the names Lemony and Jacques. Are they, by any chance, Snickets? If so, do they also have a sister named Kit?"
"What's going on here, Doc?" asked Sunny, confused.
"To be honest," Doc replied, gently, "I really have no idea."
OOC: Well, I wish you the best of luck.

“Yes, as a matter of fact,” Bertrand replied. “And—” “And Kit is the girlfriend of Esme’s guardian,” Geraldine cut off. “Even though Kit and Esme are only four years apart in age.” “The Snicket siblings are triplets,” Bertrand explained. “They’ve been associated with V.F.D. ever since their parents—.” He paused, remembering something that Jacques had once told him about being adopted. “Since Mr. and Mrs. Snicket first shipped them off to the Training School.” [Thank you. ]

"Great Scott!" gasped Doc, once again. "So you're, uh, saying that Lemony Snicket is not much older you? Also, it's my understanding that Jacques and Kit were twins - and were two years older than Lemony. Lemony Snicket was born in 1945, which would currently make him forty years old. If the Lemony Snicket you know is much younger..."
Doc felt as if he was about to faint. As a scientist, he was a genius. Still, he couldn't think of what exactly happened. "Is the... Is the year currently 1985?" Doc asked, weakly.

“That’s correct,” Bertrand clarified. “Why do you sound so shocked?”
“Not to mention what you mean by Kit and Jacques being twins,” Geraldine added. “They told us that they’re triplets. Are you sure you aren’t just a bit confused?”
She hadn’t intended for the question to sound rude— she was simply trying to get a grasp on understanding what exacly Dr. Brown had meant by all he had just said.

"I'm not sure of how to say this," Doc replied, nervously, "but I think that I, somehow, traversed a.... a trans-dimensional conduit. I have a feeling that I'm in a world that looks like home, but really isn't. I don't know too much about the Snickets, other than that Lemony is somewhat legendary - and... and Kit is..." Glancing at Beatrice - who, along with Sunny, looked very confused - he decided not to continue. "In the world that I came from, Kit and Jacques are both dead - having been killed by Count Olaf, who... who himself died on an island, over four years ago."
"What happened, Doc?" asked Sunny, with anxiety in her voice.
"I'm not completely sure, sweetheart," Doc replied, patting Sunny's head, "but try not to worry. We'll get back home, msooner or later."

A long, uncomfortable silence hung over the table like a cloud of gray mist. Geraldine reached for Bertrand’s hand, and he took it willingly.
“How terrible,” Geraldine dared to breathe at last.
She really didn’t care to know anymore details.
“What of Esmé?” Bertrand asked, his eyes focused on his lap. “Did Count Olaf ever mention a girl named Esmé Salinger?”

"Actually, yes," Doc replied, nervously. "However, I'm not sure if I should really..." Glancing around, he added, "Say, do you know of a Beatrice? You see, the parents of the Baudelaire children are... were... named Bertrand and Beatrice. That might explain why, when Sunny saw you, she..."

“I’m Bertrand!” Bertrand exclaimed. Suddenly remembering he was in a public place, he clapped both hands over his mouth. “I work with a girl named Beatrice,” he added, his tone softer this time. “Beatrice Taylor.”
“Who just happens to be engaged to one of the siblings you mentioned,” Geraldine told Doc. “Lemony Snicket.”

"Great Scott!" gasped Doc, for the third time. "In our world, the Baudelaires' mother had also dated Lemony, prior to marrying Bertrand. Apparently, the two have been dating each other since they were eleven. Beatrice's maiden name, though, was Smith. Still, it's already quite astounding - that, even though the year is still 1985, some of the folks here are younger." Glancing at the children, he asked, "Say, what about Led Zeppelin? What do you know about them?"
OOC: I keep meaning to ask you, and I keep forgetting - in your ficverse, are Lemony and Jacques identical?

Geraldine— who was not a big fan of heavy metal music —relied on Bertrand to answer that.
“Well, I know they’re a heavy metal band,” he said.
Immediately, his thoughts drifted back to what Doc had just said about Bertrand and Beatrice marrying. Despite this being a different world, and regardless of the two Beatrices’ separate surnames, Bertrand Baudelaire was unable to get his head around him ending up with Beatrice. He loved Esmé, and very dearly. It just didn’t make sense for him to love someone else.
Especially when that someone happened to be one of his girlfriend’s best friends.

"So I guess you're not a terribly big fan, then?" Doc asked, with some disappointment. Not so much because he himself was a big fan of the group, as the children seemed to be more passionate about them - but he was disappointed, as he was hoping that learning more about the Led Zeppelin in this world would shed a little more light on the differences and similarities of the worlds. "Well, what songs by the band do you like - and, uh, how long have they been around?"
OOC: BTW, you forgot to answer that question.

Bertrand smiled, and felt a little guilty for his lack of enthusiasm. Doc Brown certainly seemed nice enough: he had, after all, taken both Bertrand and Geraldine out for ice-cream after having only just met them. “Led Zeppelin were first formed back in 1968,” Bertrand explained, and then grinned. “I think the song I’m most fond of is The Lemon Song, which I sing every now and then to tease Lemony.” Geraldine snorted back a laugh, which caused both Sunny and Beatrice to start giggling. [I’m sorry that I completely forgot to answer your question regarding Lemony and Jacques earlier. ^_^;; I’ve always sort of pictured Jacques with dark hair and a slightly slimmer frame than his brother, while Lemony has a light shade of brown hair and is more muscular. Though their faces would still look very much alike. I didn’t get a whole lot of sleep last night, and so I’m going to get offline a little earlier than usual. But I’ll be back tomorrow. ]
