www.read.gov/exquisite-corpse/Just came across this - I don't think it's been announced here before. It's a serial composition by a group of children's authors - including, besides Mr Snicket, Gregory Maguire and Susan Cooper (yes, SUSAN COOPER). Snicket's episode is number 12.

Some of the episode titles sound familiar, but I'm sure I've never read any of them before now. Quite interesting! It also contains a contribution from Natalie Babbitt, who wrote Tuck Everlasting, a book I read about a year ago.

This thing must've been going on for months without us knowing! And it's all online. I wonder if it'll be published as a book when it's done. This is getting mad stickied (Announcement-ised, in fact) and I'll put together a fact file entry as soon as I've read it.
Edit: Alright, done that. Notice that the most recent chapters are actually using authors who've already contributed a chapter before - so there's every possibility that Snicket might write for this again in the future. There should be twenty-six episodes, I guess, if it's one every fortnight for a year?

There should be twenty-six episodes, I guess, if it's one every fortnight for a year? Yes - which, alert readers will notice, is twice thirteen.

It's just a pity that Snicket didn't actually write the thirteenth chapter. So near, and yet so far! I think his chapter is the best, in any case.

I agree, Snicket's was brilliant- a great idea written perfectly, and completly in character. (The downside to this is that I had higher expectations for chapter thirteen, but it turned out to be an alright chapter in its own way.)

The newest chapter came out yesterday. It isn't by Snicket, but contains, ironically, a "DEWEY FOR PRESIDENT '48 sticker".

I remember once reading a story about a mad librarian who confused Thomas Dewey with Melville Dewey, and was therefore very anxious for him to win the election.

Well, I've now read up to the latest chapter and yes, I agree that Mr Snicket's chapter is the best. I particularly like the way he draws attention to the fact that the Sloppys' life seems to have been written by a series of different authors.

This has some interesting information: www.readingrockets.org/books/fun/exquisiteprompt if you scroll down until you see a chart, the May section has Daniel Handler's name in the box and says that the "winner" will be announced on the twenty-first. It also mentions that there will be eighteen authors (and illustrators) throughout, which increases the chance that Snicket will be writing again.

That seems like a pretty interesting contest - authors, many associated with TECA, submit prompts and schoolkids have to follow those prompts in their own writing. Whoever submits the best response to a prompt gets a prize. Handler's prompts have been and gone, though.
Good point about it noting that TECA has eighteen authors and illustrators, though (presumably eighteen of each) - let me count how many so far... I think the first fourteen episodes were each done by different people (one by two different people, so perhaps that's actually fifteen?). So there should be another three or four different authors left to contribute. It started late September, so there's over two months to go, with new entries every fortnight... I think there are only another six left. More than half of those should be taken by new authors. It's not looking too good.

Ah, excellent! My calculations suggested that time'd be a bit tight for Snicket to write another chapter, so I'm glad that he's in. Thanks for pointing this out; I don't usually remember to check this.

The new chapter came out today; it's really good. Snicket instructs confused readers to turn to the first chapter, and I did so to realize exactly what was happening. Brilliant.

That was absolutely fantastic. Very TPP-esque, too. Thank goodness Snicket is involved with this project.
Edit: Thanks, too, to Sherry Ann, since I keep on forgetting this exists.
