I wonder how many people guessed this. I'd heard rumours in advance relating to Quigley returning, but in reading the book I briefly thought that they referred to Carmelita. Who ironically is a less important character than Quigley, but appeared in four times as many books as he did.

I assumed it was going to be a new character. As a matter of fact, I was pretty suspicious of Quigley when he was revealed to be so- mostly because I thought he'd have been traumatized by whatever caused him to be widely accepted as dead, and perhaps thus joined the opposite side of V.F.D.

That could have been cool. Great for an alternative universe fic.

I'm re-reading ASOUE for the first time in three years and I just finished TSS. I wasn't so surprised when Quigley was revealed to being alive the whole time, but it still made me extremely excited. I do agree that it would've been a nice twist to the story if he had been a villain, but I'm very happy with the way he was. After all, VFD needed that extra member, even if he and his siblings all later ended up in the Great Unknown. However, I do find it rather depressing how short of a time Quigley is physically in the series. The same thing happens with Dewey in TPP. But, it's Lemony Snicket who wrote it after all, so what can you do, really?

There are quite a few charactesr with a huge presence in the series who aren't actually in it that much. Isadora and Duncan are only in three books, and only a couple of chapters of two of those. This means they've been in fewer books than Carmelita Spats, for example. Quigley suffers from the same effect. Even though they aren't in the books much, the Baudelaires think about them quite often, and as fans we were certainly expecting them to return with pretty much every book that came out.

I didn't actually know about this. I am amazed that Quigley survived, seeing as his siblings were getting attacked in that balloon by the birds. I know that Kit Snicket tried to save them, but failed, so why didn't Quigley, or at least try to find them. I suppose he did, and I must have missed that part in the book, because it's been a while since I've read it.

We're talking about Quigley appearing in TSS after surviving the Quagmire fire, not about him surviving the eagles' attack on the self-sustaining hot air mobile home. Kit states in TPP that he'd left in a helicopter to join his siblings, and she explains in The End that he'd helped them construct a giant net to capture the eagles, but the balloons of the self-sustaining hot air mobile home were burst anyway and he was taken by the Great Unknown.
