What time period did ASOUE happen in?

They send telegrams and they have regular phones, so when did the books take place? And I am also confused because Kit Snicket gave her students at Prufrock Prep TBB I think, but how would that be possible unless the books take place in modern time? And in TE, Kit Snicket dies, so why would Lemony Snicket write that note to her in TSS if she was dead (hmmm or presumed to be dead maybe?), and at least ten years have passed since TE (Beatrice II is ten), so I am reeally confused.

Oh boy. This is such a huge can of worms. My opinion is that the series takes place in a fictional time period in a fictional world that shares some details with ours, but attempting to locate it in specific space-time with reference to our Earth is impossible.
