--- 'Harris Burdick' inspires all-star short story collectionA short story collection based on Chris Van Allsburg's picture book The Mysteries of Harris Burdick is due out from US publisher Houghton Mifflin in fall 2011, announced industry resource Publishers Weekly on September 16. Among authors set to contribute tales to the anthology are Stephen King, Louis Sachar, Sherman Alexie, and Lois Lowry. The Mysteries of Harris Burdick includes 14 detailed black-and-white illustrations, each accompanied by a single line of text. Van Allsburg (Jumanji, The Polar Express) intended the book, first published in 1984, as an inspiration for young readers to create their own stories based on the images/captions. The book has also previously served as inspiration for adult writers, among them Stephen King, whose short story "The House on Maple Street" from 1993's Nightmares and Dreamscapes is based on the book's final image. Called The Chronicles of Harris Burdick: 14 Amazing Authors Tell the Tales, the new anthology will include Stephen King's short story, as well as a story by his wife, Tabitha King. Besides Sachar, Alexie, and Lowry, other contributing authors include M.T. Anderson, Kate DiCamillo, Cory Doctorow, Jules Feiffer, Gregory Maguire, Walter Dean Myers, Jon Scieszka, and Van Allsburg. Lemony Snicket will contribute an introduction. Due out from Houghton Mifflin in fall 2011, The Chronicles of Harris Burdick is intended for readers ages eight through 12. ---
