Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire aren't actually real; they're fictional characters, and their suffering is, fortunately, also fictional. Lemony Snicket, in the stories, is connected to them because he was in love with their mother when the two of them were young, and once she and the Baudelaires' father died, the Baudelaire children started to go through some of the same terrifying experiences that Lemony did. In real life, Lemony Snicket is a man called Daniel Handler.
