Count Olaf - a smoker?

I was just wondering if any of you (particularly fanfiction writers) see Olaf as a smoker. I don't see him as addicted or chain-smoking because in my opinion, it's a little sterotypical. You know, a villain doing bad things just to look cool. In my ficverse, he is aware of the health issues and is an occasional smoker, but only does it when he's with people and when he's stressed or upset about something. I also have him as an occasional pot smoker.



But personally, I don't mind smokers and if that's what they want to do, then that's fine with me. I just get bothered by it when they smoke around me because I hate the smell

That never occurred to me. I see him more as a wino. He does drink a lot of wine in the canon, so yeah. But maybe he smokes cigars every now and then. He sure seems the type to like cigars, not cheap cigarrettes, IMO.

I think TSS implies that he doesn't smoke, because of the whole business of the Verdant Flammable Devices, the sinister duo getting some for Esmé and her later going to get some for herself and Olaf showing no interest, Esmé doesn't like the taste or smell and therefore probably wouldn't let him smoke while she was around... so canonically, it looks like he doesn't smoke, but I can definitely see him using a cigar as a status symbol.

I imagine Esme smoking a cigarette from a cigarette holder like Audrey Hepburn. I also imagine Olaf as a cigarette smoker.

I think a lot of the adult characters are smokers since this is a retro-universe.

He was something of a foodie, wanting roast beef and "nice hot breakfasts", so my vote would be no, since smoking destroys your sense of taste and smell after a while.

You're in luck. Esmé specifically states in TSS that she only likes to smoke cigarettes in a long cigarette holder.

Oh gosh, yes. That's caused some controversy, hasn't it, given that the taxi driver seems to be Lemony?

While he was probably intended to be Lemony in TPP, he almost certainly wasn't in TWW; however, to create the link between the characters in TPP and TWW, the same description had to be employed, and that required the cigarette. In other words, it's a casuality of retroactive continuity, but it's also one that can easily be explained. For example: Disguise.
