It's about the Quagmires. I was reading the book earlier and suddenly, I noticed something rather suspicious. The Quagmires said that they lived in the Orphan Shack for three semesters because they didn't have a parent or guardian to sign the permission slip. So, if they're now staying in the dorm, who adopted them? Could it be anyone significant? Kit or Jacques or someone like that?

I don't have much time to post right now, but we learn in TSS that the Quagmire estate was placed in the care of Esmé Squalor. She may be the Quagmires' equivalent of Mr. Poe, although of course in TEE there's no sign of the Squalors knowing anything about them.

The bit about Esme being their financial adviser is a bit odd, as you would think that if that were so Olaf would have no difficulty becoming their guardian. Possibly Quigley is confused. As for the question how they got out of the Orphans' Shack, there doesn't seem to be any answer to that in canon. I believe someone wrote a fic about it, entitled 'The Good Guardian' .

One possibility, I suppose, is that Vice-Principal Nero reluctantly let them into the dormitories so that there'd be room in the shack for the new orphans, although that seems like the sort of thing they would've mentioned. ...Actually, any way out of the shack seems like something they should've mentioned to their new friends.

Isn't there a discrepancy concerning the time they spent at Prufrock ? In TSS we learn that the Quagmire fire happened more or less near the end of TRR, if not after that. Yet the triplets say they've spent "three semesters" in the Shack. So TWW and TMM (and even possibly more unmentioned gardians) take up a very long time, but at the same time we know that TBB through TVV and TGG can't take more than a year (because of Violet's and Klus birthdays). It seems extremely unlikely that the triplets would have spent three "semesters" at Prufrock since TRR.
That's one hell of a clumsy retcon... Or maybe a semester, in Prufrock terminology, is more or less akin to a month ?

You're right about the discrepancy, yes. There are various ways of cutting it, but it's not really worth it, as there are chronological problems elsewhere in the series, too. I think your best bet is really to take the view that "semester" is a subjective term which signifies different lengths of time in different academic institutions.

1. It seems more in tone/character that they would force 5 people into the Orphan Shack, so I don't think that is it. 2. I think the books say no-one has a track of time at Prufrock.

I have never thought about the possibility of Quagmires having a guardian
