It just pisses me off that they aren't really freaks, but still work there. Colette uses the excuse: They wouldn't pay me to move normally- Well, they don't really pay her! And Kevin is just anoying, he complains all the time and he doesn't really have a malformation, he could just use either hane and no one would notice, still, he is the one who most complains about being a freakshow! I feel bad for Hugo, because he is the only one with a real problem there. So tell me people, what do you think about them? Do they annoy you aswell? Please comment.

Actually, I feel bad for them - because people treat them badly for their abilities.

Yes, even though Colette and Kevin have what could be called talents, it's made quite clear that other people treat them as freaks - certainly within the confines of the freakshow, and thus it's not implausible that they'd be ostracised outside of it. Although I think the point here is that there are certain frameworks which are set up so as to legitimise all criticism of certain individuals; you could draw an analogy to reality TV shows, in which anyone is fair game for criticism for any aspect of their personality or appearance, or also to social structures like the class system. Children who are left-handed or have red hair often come in for similar mistreatment from their peers. It's all a matter of where you live and where you're raised; Dewey is ambidextrous, but being raised within V.F.D. would lead that to be treated as a talent rather than something to be mocked.

I think the constant complaining from the "freaks" is, in a way, satirizing a pessimist's view of the world. As explained before now, anyone could qualify as a freak by the standards Colette and Kevin seem to be following; it's how you view these abnormalities that makes a difference.

I wasn't saying that I don't feel bad for what they went through, I do, but I think they all, even Hugo, could just runaway and find a real job! What is pissing me off is that they feel so bad for themselves! I feel bad for them, I do, but just because they feel bad for theseves doesn't mean they can't do something about it and the Baudelaires are proof of that.

Daniel Handler himself said something about that. He was talking about how Kevin complained so much that he was a freak, when he could just use one hand and no one would notice.

They're probably worried that very few people would like them, with those traits. Of course, they could just hide those traits - but why should they have to stay in the closet, just so they can be accepted by other people?

I think the absurdity of that makes it funny.

...but I think they all, even Hugo, could just runaway and find a real job! They do. They run away with Count Olaf's troupe and get a job with him. They're members of the troupe, and nobody questions their abilities there.

I don't judge freaks! Yes, they are far from the nicest people in ASoUE but they are not traitors! They didn't change their side because they have never been on a good side. They have never been on any sides until they Count Olaf's troupe. They never were Baudelaires' friends and so they didn't betray them by joining Olaf. And you know I love them! I love Kevin because he is so dramatic and unusual and we a lot in common with him. I also love e Hugo and Colette has got such beautiful name! C.S.C, I think you understood who did I name myself after. I mean I think you understood why is my nickname is Colette

I'm sorry, I'm not blaming you.

Oh, I'm sorry. Had you not finished TCC yet? Maybe you should keep some sort of progress chart in your signature.
