if you remember, when violet is making her staple making device, she wants sunny to trap a crab. then she explains to klaus, "when he, or she, come to think of it. I can't tell a boy crab from a girl crab." then klaus answers, "it's a boy. trust me." what do you think he means by THAT?

Hahahahah I have no idea! I have not noticed that! I guess he read it in one of his books...

Funnily enough, I'm sure people have remarked on that in the past. I assume that, as csc says, Klaus has come across this particular kind of crab in his reading. It's one of those odd slips in propriety which occasionally appear in the early books.

yeah, but have you noticed that when he has read something in a book, he usually shares that. for example, sometimes he says "i once read a book about..." this time he doesn't! o well!

Apparently (well, according to Wikipedia) it is quite easy to tell a boy from a girl crab; females are more rounded, while males generally have one extra large claw. So we needn't suppose Klaus has been looking at intimate details.

Well if the information Hermes provided is correct, then it would make sense. But I don't trust Wikipedia much and I thought we weren't supposed to prove points using their information, because it comes from unsafe sources. Anyhow it's a funny part of the book and I don't tink it's iimportant, it's really just to have a laugh.

You certainly shouldn't rely on Wikipedia when writing papers in a formal context (and anyone who got their knowledge of ASOUE from Wikipedia would end up pretty confused). But for facts that are reasonably well-known and not controversial, it's generally OK.

Claw size is not a definitive way to determine gender in crustaceans because it depends on the species but it can be true most of the time. The gender of a crustacean is usually determined by flipping it over and looking at (not reproductive organs) these things called swimmerets which have a different structure in the male or female. It's weird looking. I had to determine the gender of a lobster and it wasn't fun...so now I can't eat them.

I always assumed he was making a joke about its (the crab's) overly aggressive behaviour, to be honest.

It could be a joke but Klaus read a lot of books.

Klaus could write an encyclopedia if he weren't a wanted fugitive.
