Was Mr. Poe an actor before becoming a banker? I think so because when Olaf is telling his story before Ishmael shoots him, one of the islanders says, "Mr. Poe?" and Olaf says, "Yes, but he was know under his stage name."
what do you think?

That particular reminiscence seems likely, albeit only through circumstantial evidence, to take place quite some time in the past, whereas Mr. Poe was only promoted to Vice President in Charge of Orphan Affairs in TEE. I consider it to refer to a different Mr. Poe, given that the one we know isn't better-known under a stage name of any kind at the moment, nor does he have any kind of theatrical role, either before or after his promotion to VPiCoOA.

i thought about that, it being a different mr. poe. strange coincidence though! It might be our Mr Poe's father. But actually, it suggests he was an actor at the same time as he was a banker - he had been promoted to VPICOOA, but he was still better known by his stage name. This isn't too surprising, given that Esme also seems to have combined the two professions.

Whichever it is, I strongly suspect that it was largely a joke and not something necessarily to be taken seriously on our part, or indeed on the author's part.

When driving Klaus, Violet, and Sunny to Olaf's home, Mr. Poe was trying to be encouraging, therefore he was telling the children of how exciting it would be to live with an actor. He also said that few people like him would be ready to except orphans, such as themselves, so enthusiastically. Mr. Poe was jealous of the Baudelaires because of this, therefore, it does not seem he was an actor himself or that he had grown up in a similar situation.

Yes, I guess it could be his father.

Oh, how I wish Mr. Snicket would answer our ongoing questions. What if he joined ASOUE!? I do believe that mr. Poe was an actor, it just seems to fit. Mr. poe is a woman, also.

Do you really belive Mr. Poe is a woman?! Why do you think so? That's sounds unbelivable!

Mr. Poe being a woman is a long-standing misinterpretation of the "Not A Chapter" illustrations from TPP, which depict a moustached man wearing a top hat discarding his disguise to reveal himself to be a woman. However, the actual narration of TPP describes this happening to a random housemaid, and not Mr. Poe.

Yes, colette, this is really strange and impossible ( at least, for me) : Mr. Poe, a woman ?! And I just can't imagine he acting : just doesn't fit with his way. But, after people in the series finding Olaf a good actor, anybody can be a famous actor in ASOUE.
