Are Hugo, Colette and Kevin are added character just for making ASoUE funnier or they something mean something important for ASoUE? Are they just Baudelaires' and later Count Olaf's associates or they are also related with other characters someway? I think they are interesting and we need to discuss them.

I definitely think they're significant to the social commentary of the series; TCC is full of messages about how we treat members of society because they look different or are placed in a situation where our contempt for them seems to be sanctioned; you might draw analogies to reality TV contestants, for instance.

But it would be very nice to find something more interesting.

It would've been interesting if there had been references hidden anywhere indicating that they were related to or in some othe way connected to charactes from the rest of the cast, and that seems like something Handler would've done if it had been important, but evidently it wasn't.

I think that they were more a commentary on learned laziness as a psychological concept taken to its extreme conclusion. Kevin and Colette spent 90% of their time on the pages moping and feeling sorry for themselves. They did positively nothing on their own to improve their lives or take advantage of their unique skills, which made them irritating and unsympathetic. But then you start to wonder how much of that attitude manifested from years of ridicule and being told repeatedly that they were freaks, instead of using more positive language, and it's easier to see how their self-defeatism crystallized.

That is exactly the sort of interpretation we should be devising, yes.

I think that pretty much sums it up, in a nutshell. I think all of us wish to be liked by other people - so, with them being treated with ridicule from just about everyone, it's easy to see why they would have such low self-esteem. I myself can relate to that, which is I view the freaks with more sympathy.
