I don't hate him at all. Am I alone?

If Mr. Poe were different, the plot of aSoUE would never have happened. This may be a good or a bad thing.

I hate Mr. Poe for his ignorance and his incapacity to believe in children. He treats them like they don't know a thing even though they have proven to be right several times. He can't learn with his experience and that makes him one of my least favourite characters.

I don't dislike him any more than the other ignorant, unhelpful characters in ASOUE. But I agree with csc--one of his most frustrating characteristics is his inability to realize that the Baudelaire can, in fact, be intelligent and children at the same time.

Mr Poe is the archetypal 'unhelpful adult'. He is certainly very annoying. But I have defended him from time to time aginst people who see him as a villain - if he were a villain he could have done a deal with Olaf, and the story would have been over much more quickly. He is an honourable man, and it's quite possible he dies defending the Baudelaires' interests.

Mr. Poe reminds me a bit of Calandrino, from The Decameron, and other literary characters in that vein who are infamous for their overconfidence in their own abilities and their utter inability to learn from their mistakes, like a less charming Don Quixote. He's amusing in his own way, but frustratingly condescending, arrogant, and incompetent.

I think he is pretty much a caricature of how kids often view older adults, who seem to be well-meaning but clueless. So, no, he's definitely not my favourite character.

I think he is pretty much a caricature of how kids often view older adults, who seem to be well-meaning but clueless. So, no, he's definitely not my favourite character. Not mine, too. I didn't say I love him. He just not my least favorite character. I didn't say he is my favorite. Certainly, I love Kevin and especially Fernald much more beacause they are definitely MUCH more interesting. Reason for Editing: Moderator Edit: Merging double-post.

I don't particularly like Mr. Poe, but I don't hate him either. He's definitely a shady character, and I'm convinced we don't know all of his dark secrets. For the most part, though, he's an alright guy. He's noble enough.
