We know that the names of several islanders derive from the story of the mutiny on the Bounty: Bligh from the Captain, Fletcher from Fletcher Christian, the mutineers' leader, and Pitcairn from Pitcairn Island, where the mutineers settled. But there may be another reference.
I've just discovered that Fletcher Christian had a son by a Tahitian woman, the first child to be born on Pitcairn Island. His name: Thursday October Christian (because he was born on a Thursday in October). So, it seems that Thursday is not just a variation on Friday (whose name clearly comes from Robinson Crusoe) but an allusion in his own right.

If Handler knew about Thursday October Christian, of course. But it's certainly an interesting observation that adds to the tapestry of references encoded in the islanders (or in this case, a former islander).

Speaking of which, it might be worthwhile to add Thursday to this document - he wasn't an islander on-screen, but he has a fair amount of backstory, plus this new discovery to make him an important addition. Thursday October Christian creates an interesting duality in allusions, though; it doesn't seem unlikely Handler would know about him, given his allusions to the works.

I've just done so, but if anyone can think of a better formulation, please post it.
