I was rereading TGG, and something that I haven't actually paid attention in the first time I read, got me. Lemony says Fiona's mother didn't die in an accident with a manatee and that Fiona suspected of this. There's anything related with this in the other books that I haven't noticed ? Or maybe does anyone has any theories or ideias ? Maybe she was dead in a fire like everybody from V.F.D who died ?

It's slightly ambiguous; Widdershins says she died in a manatee accident early on, and Fiona immediately states that she doesn't think it was an accident, while Snicket says that she didn't die in a manatee accident. The two are actually contradictory; Fiona seems to think that a manatee was nonetheless involved in her mother's death, while Snicket seems to think the whole incident didn't cause her death at all. It's never referred to before or again, though.

Another thing for us to speculate on......I always thought that Captain Widdershins used the "mantee accident" excuse to cover up something else......

I thought that as well. I believe she died in the fire at Anwhistle Aquatics.

or perhaps she's still alive.....somewhere...... I think it's possible she is the swimming woman; seeing her again might give the captain enough of a shock to make him desert his post. Lemony says the captain was wrong to think his wife died in a manatee accident (as part of a list of things he was wrong about), so it seems he did indeed think that. I think the way it is put is sufficently vague to leave it uncertain whether there was a manatee incident of some sort; the way Fiona puts it certainly suggests there was.

That's an interesting theory- I never thought of it.

In my ficverse Renata Widdershins(in my head canon Fiona's mother's name was Renata) died in the Great Uknown.

That's actually a very interesting theory. I haven't thought of that before. But wasn't that Duchess R? A lot of other people seem to think it was her. But Mrs. Widdershins is an interesting theory as well.

But Mrs. Widdershins is an interesting theory as well. I don't think there's actually any positive evidence in favour of it being R. - it's more a case of it being an opportunity to get her into the story. It was a more compelling theory back when we thought we might actually meet the swimming woman, but in the end we didn't, so it probably doesn't matter.

The swimming woman has always got me confused, and I was thinking that she might have been Kit or Esme for some random and unknown reason. There are many women that Madame Swim, as I have decided to call her could be, but Madame Swim being Mrs Widdershins is a better idea. It is very annoying though, how CW keeps on hiding things from Fiona.
