I know this, of course. I'm doing it for him, aswell. But I saw last year's reply and couldn't help getting a bit excited. And in my last comment, I was saying that I wanted some sort of clue for the new series, I was just saying I wanted to see his reply- does he always say something? Or am I just being ignorant here?

I'm just teasing you, F.D. We've had a reply two years running, I think, but only a short one each time. Before that we'd occasionally send things, but I don't think we ever got an answer. It's only recently that our projects for Mr. Handler's birthday have gotten better-organised.

I'm just teasing you, F.D. We've had a reply two years running, I think, but only a short one each time. Before that we'd occasionally send things, but I don't think we ever got an answer. It's only recently that our projects for Mr. Handler's birthday have gotten better-organised. I think it goes back a bit further than that. This is the fourth I have taken part in, but the archives show things going back beyond that, with major projects in 2007 and 2008. No reply seems to be recorded for 2009, but there was one in 2008, and there are cryptic references to ones before that. Perhaps in 2009 some particular misfortune stopped him writing?

I still need to collect up everyone's signatures, but I'll do that in a bit. Here's my draft letter: --- Dear Sir, Permit us, once again, to extend our heartiest of congratulations on this, your birthday. Forty-two years of life is a personal milestone that only a few of our number have achieved, and the rest of us only dare to hope that we might – and to be graced by your work for some thirteen years now is no misfortune but an honour we can only attempt to be worthy of. It is for that attempt – we can only hope you will read these words with a sigh of pleasure rather than woe – that we have once again taken up our pens, keyboards, and miscellaneous input devices to compose a celebration worthy of your work. Another author who some of us have researched – a late author now, for every deadline and surprise party – believed that the number forty-two was a fated figure. He wrote that it was the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. As is so often the case, the question was just as mysterious as the answer. But in the spirit of this question, and in celebration of your forty-second birthday, we the members of 667 Dark Avenue set out to answer the legendary question of misfortune, a problem just as enormous, and one which you surely deserve an answer to. But instead of an answer of forty-two, we researched forty-two answers, each yielding as much misfortune as the last. Where is the answer to this and all misfortune? Perhaps we were asking the wrong questions. But it is strange how all the wrong questions can become something wonderful with just a few capital letters. So too might our answers reveal something wonderful, if they are read in just the right way. Those ways are mysterious to us, but perhaps an international expert on misfortune like yourself can see through these mysteries and find a source of hope hidden beneath these tragedies. That, too, is our only hope. We wish you the best of luck, sir, and the hope that you will not need it. With all due respect, Antenora, blakegriplingph, Brunch, Bryan, BSam, Countess Violet, Cybermystery, Dante, Emma “Emmz” Squalor, F.D., Hermes, Linda Rhaldeen, LSWannabe, nominatissima, s, Sherry Ann, Sixteen, Sophie Baudelaire, thedoctororwell, Tiago Squalor, tk, Tragedy & all the other members of 667 Dark Avenue --- Edit: Put all the information together in one place. Any comments on this draft? Good or bad, changes?

Perhaps we were asking the wrong questions. Nice. Haha I'm guessing that was on purpose? The only concern I would have is if it's clear enough how to get the hidden message. I think it sounds good though.

Seems good. Will this be in a frame or something of the sort? And as Bryan commented: "all the wrong questions"- smooth.
P.S.: I mean a virtual frame, obviously.

I think there are enough clues to the fact that there are a secret message; there are several inside the stories themselves as well as the hints in the letter, and I don't think there's anything more we can do in that regard without making it too obvious.
As to the frame, I'd like to see if anyone wants to change anything about the draft, but if not then I have been making enquiries, and the sooner we can settle on the draft, the more time there'll be for the frame.

Yeah, I think it's clear enough from your letter, your Initial story and my whatever letter was left story. Remember, this is a man who does codes and secrets throughout his books.

Without resorting to virtual punch-out letters, anyway. The draft letter is excellent, and the stories have been checked along the way, yes?

The draft letter is excellent, and the stories have been checked along the way, yes? I checked them as I went along. It's possible that some errors slipped through the net, but at this point, if there are any, I kinda don't want to know.

Looks great!
I actually did find an error in the apple story. It says "fimly" when I think it meant to say firmly.

Well, if F.D. could fix that in the next couple of days, that'd be great. If not - well, even the series proper has the odd typo; you can never entirely rule out human error.

The draft letter looks good. I like the reference to "the wrong questions."
