I've just received a HarperCollins Book Blast e-mail which mentions the reprints in some detail - remember, they're out tomorrow, and we can probably expect an AuthorTracker about them then, too (I believe HC is obliged to send one out whenever a new book is released). There's nothing new in this Book Blast, though, although tomorrow's AuthorTracker may be more generous with its information. Here's roughly what there was: --- For the first time, books in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events are being released in paperback and they’re packed with shocking surprises. Each paperback includes an old-time magazine, featuring an advice column by Mr. Snicket; a five-page comic called “The Spoily Brats”; a serialized story; and more. With all-new illustrations, these books are almost too bad to be true. Are you certain you want to download a free sampler? --- The Misfortune ContinuesWhen A Series of Unfortunate Events reached The End, those who avoided the sorrowful saga of the Baudelaire orphans could finally rest easily. But no more. The story of the Baudelaires is coming in paperback. Uncover their origins in The Bad Beginning[/i], follow their downward spiral in The Reptile Room, and enter for your chance to win copies of these new editions. Learn More---

The paperback reprints of The Bad Beginning and The Reptile Room are officially released today. So everyone watch out for The Bad Beginning or, Orphans! and The Reptile Room or, Murder! in bookstores from now, distinctive by their restyled covers, their additional HarperCollins supplement The Cornucopian Cavalcade, all-new illustrations, and all the other stuff you should already know about. AuthorTracker - with an unsettling change in tone and style perhaps down to the fact that the reprints have no Dear Reader letter - says this: --- Snicket in Paperback: More Misery for Less Money --- May 2007 To the Unsuspecting Recipient, BE ADVISED! For the first time, books in A Series of Unfortunate Events are available everywhere in paperback. No. 1: The Bad Beginning, or Orphans! and No. 2: The Reptile Room, or Murder! are luring the masses with their sensational covers, revealing illustrations, and irresponsibly low price. Perhaps the most dangerous thrills are to be found at the back of these books, where a free supplement entitled "The Cornucopian Cavalcade" offers oddities and amusements likely to shock all but the sturdiest readers. Do you really want to strain your heart by reading the author's " What Shall I Do, Lemony Snicket?" advice column? Will you be blinded by " The Spoily Brats" graphic serial? Can your mind possibly withstand "'Q.' A Psychic Pstory of the Psupernatural"? What about an advertisement for a hotel staffed by monkeys? It is likely that your answers to these questions will reveal Mr. Snicket's paperback editions to be ill-suited for your personal use. If that is not the case, we cannot legally stop you from purchasing them. With all due respectability, HarperCollins Publishers Daniel Handler will be appearing in San Francisco, New York, Toronto, Boston, and Portland to discuss Adverbs, his latest novel for adults, now available in paperback. Click here to learn more. --- (Also, as I suspected, while Amazon.co.uk originally listed these as being available, it's now changed its listing to indicate they're no longer available. Any 667ers in the U.K. - and, I presume, outside North America - will probably have to import, and may want to wait for the box set of the first three that will be available early September.) Edit: Also, as I'm deleting these from the first post as they're no longer upcoming, here's my information about these two reprints, so I have a record and you have a recap. --- Title: The Bad Beginning or, Orphans!LemonySnicket.com Page: www.lemonysnicket.com/descpage.cfm?bookid=71453&type=paperbackPaperback MinisiteRelease Date (North America): 8th May 2007 (according to Amazon Canada: 25th April 2007) Cover:Book Image:Synopsis: PLEASE READ SOMETHING ELSE. —Lemony Snicket Are you made fainthearted by death? For those rare, rare few of you who actually care, Amazon.co.uk's put up an apparently updated version of the new cover for the upcoming rerelease of the U.A. in the U.K. by Egmont. Spot the difference! Before: After:

I think the second cover is better, but is there any other reason for re-releasing that book?

I gather the U.A.'s been out of print in the U.K. for... I don't know, years? They may be trying to capitalise on Snicket interest for those who only got into the series later on. I heard a while back that Egmont was looking into producing their own paperback copies of the series, so a rereleased U.A. might complement that, or test the rerelease market; they could also promote it alongside the U.K. release of Horseradish on the same day, I guess.

I see several differences, some only slight differences. Most noticeably, a more zoomed out picture of Olaf and a less frightening picture of Sunny.

The old version of the Egmont UA is horribly awkward to read. The cover opens on both sides at once and the style doesn't fit with the rest of the series. That said, I don't think I'll be getting the new one.

I never thought myself a boy of fragile temperament, but now... --- Are you ready for crude animiation from Lemony Snicket? --- July 2007 Dear Concerned Citizen, Are you made fainthearted by the work of Lemony Snicket? Does the thought of strange new siblings unnerve you? How about CRUDE ANIMATION? Your answers likely reveal the following brief video to be ill-suited for your personal use. Amusing to the last.
That needed to be on television.

Perhaps foreshadowing an AuthorTracker, LemonySnicket.com's Books section has updated to include the Disappearance! edition of TWW. The paperback section has also done so, and includes a more colourful version of the cover ( discuss here). The entry includes most of the official synopsis: Do you become skittish around leeches? What about boats? Does the thought of a peppermint allergy cause you to quake? Are you a person frightened by frightened people? Perhaps hurricanes? Poor grammar? A secret code? It is likely that your answers will reveal A Series of Unfortunate Events to be ill-suited for your personal use? A librarian, bookseller, or acquaintance should be able to suggest books more appropriate for your fragile temperament. But to the rarest of readers we say, “Best of luck—you're going to need it.”
