I see why my search didn't work. Borders has it listed as The Latke Who Wouldn't Stop Screaming instead of Couldn't. I had been searching for the exact title, which they have wrong. (It seems to be a matter of will instead of skill.)
Anyway, Shruti's search works and my store does have it. But do tell us what you think of it, Shruti.

Okay, I read it. There were parts that were very funny and parts that were just plain bizarre. It was very short, but that was to be expected. It actually would have given little kids an idea of what Hanukah was - like, it actually *was* designed for kids, although the humor seemed ... not like something that little kids would get, because it was kind of ironic and maybe a little subversive.
The illustrations were kind of disappointing in that the same exact picture of a screaming latke was used for like, half the pages.
But yeah, it was fun. The end was great.

Normaly Snicket books come to Canada on the release date, but I can`t find this book anywhere.

Here's an interesting article where Daniel Handler and Lisa Brown talk about The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming: www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6501149.html?nid=2788At the end, it suggests that another Christmas title is planned for 2008 with HarperCollins. (This could maybe refer to The Composer Is Dead, which should be released around that time, but the implication here is that the work itself is Christmas-y, not just that it's being released around Christmas-time.) |

Thanks, Dante. It's nice we got to hear from Lisa Brown as well. “We wanted to make it look like we cheated. We have pages in a row of the same image, and that just cracked us up.” - so that was the logic behind that.

By the way, in the rare event that anyone actually cares, it looks like the book was never really coming out in the U.K. To be honest, I'm not confident I ever thought it would, based on past experience; anything that doesn't come through Egmont doesn't exist here. Given that HarperCollins operates in the U.K. (and Egmont is going to branch out to the U.S.), I'm not sure this was ever necessary, but that's the way things are, and it doesn't always cost too much to import.
Edit: Oh yeah, and Amazon.co.uk is listing the release date for Kidnapping! as being the 4th of January. I'd take that with a rather large pinch of salt, as all indications so far are that HC isn't planning another dual-release of the paperbacks, although I'm sure we wouldn't object.

Amazon.com is still listing Kidnapping! as April 1st 2008, so as Dante said, don't take these dates too seriously. No Cover Artwork has yet to be released for Hypnotism! though it is supposedly meant to be out 4 weeks from today.

I've just realised why Amazon.co.uk thinks Kidnapping! is out on January 4th, incidentally; it's actually rather obvious. They were probably given a release date of 4/1/2008, which is April 1st - by American dating convention. By the dating convention used in the U.K., 4/1/2008 is January 4th. So it's just an honest mistake, although another dual release of the paperbacks would have been a good idea, although I doubt the material gets produced quickly enough.
As for the lack of cover art for Hypnotism!, it is rather curious, but I don't think it's such a short time until the book is released. I find highly dubious B&N's release date of December 26th, the day after Christmas, and I think that the 1st January dates seen elsewhere are more accurate; however, the first of a month is often a sort of placeholder date on online stores for a book that might be released at any time during that month. It seems likely that Hypnotism! is set for sometime later in January, although the first half still seems a little more likely. That said, it'd still be curious timing, for the gap between TWW and TMM to be longer than the gap between TMM and the much longer TAA, but then again the bonus material doesn't really have anything to do with the page count; maybe they've got something extra planned for TMM, like the advertisements in Orphans!, and they're also starting the new serial story in that book, there could be copyright issues. It might also just be a marketing strategy, too. All the same, let's hope we get some fancy Hypnotism! cover art in time for Christmas. It's not everyone's favourite book, but there's an awful lot that would make a great illustration.

Both Dec 26th and Jan 1st are Wednesdays. Books are typically released on Tuesdays here in the US. I'm guessing it will be one of the Tuesdays in January.

Well, it is now two days until the 'supposed' release of Hypnotism according to Barnes and Noble.com . Amazon.com is reporting a release on the 1st of January, which is only a week away, making me all the more certain that the book seems to have been forgotten by the publishers, and it won't be released for quite some time.

If it's not out on 1st January, which does indeed seem very likely by now, I'll do some asking around. I presume it's too close to Christmas to be worth asking right now (and I'll be going away in a couple of days). Best-case scenario, further details on the book for some reason never filtered through to the sales websites - this is the sort of thing that's happened with the U.K. publishers before. Worst-case scenario, low sales have caused the cancellation of the paperbacks, but even if that were the case I believe it would be possible for us to obtain files of the unused material.

So, like yeah. It's now after the first of January, and neither Barnes and Noble.com nor Amazon has any image, or any actual copies. Amazon is still saying its not released and B&N is saying its out of stock which very much suggests that the book is not coming out soon....if at all. If Dante recieves any more information, then perhaps there is hope, but I am seriously in doubt that Hypnotism will be on your bookshelves in the foreseeable future.
