I hate going to the bookstore every other day, so I pre-ordered it from Amazon. If/when it's ever published, at least I can just wait for it to be delivered.

Ask and it will be given to you. In other words, here's the scoop: "The remaining paperbacks are being postponed for the time being." So the excitement of an upcoming book is replaced with the excitement of... uncertainty.

The 2008 HarperCollins Snicket Christmas story referred to here may have been revealed: Here's an interesting article where Daniel Handler and Lisa Brown talk about The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming: www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6501149.html?nid=2788At the end, it suggests that another Christmas title is planned for 2008 with HarperCollins. (This could maybe refer to The Composer Is Dead, which should be released around that time, but the implication here is that the work itself is Christmas-y, not just that it's being released around Christmas-time.) Amazon.com lists The Lump of Coal as being released on September 30th this year, by HarperCollins. It's authored by Snicket, and illustrated by Brett Helquist, and comes in two editions, the hardback at $12.99 and a library binding at $14.89, with both sporting page counts of 40 (that's eight less than it lists for The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming, although the printed page count for that stops at 43). The Lump of Coal (hardcover)The Lump of Coal (library binding)The twist? Snicket wrote The Lump of Coal three years ago for USA Weekend magazine, and it's been online to read for free ever since, including now. I should note that it only includes Helquist's cover illustration, though, and not the story illustrations. www.usaweekend.com/04_issues/041212/041212lemony_snicket.html

That's a disappointment. I'd rather have nothing than see them release what was already free online.

So, it's been two months. Has anyone heard any news on the paperbacks?

No news, but I'm not expecting any until the projected release of TAA (sometime April) at the very earliest - and more likely, in my opinion, sometime later than that. I'm giving it the full year, considering they were only to come out at three- or four-month intervals.
Edit: Also, Amazon.com has two entries for editions of The Composer Is Dead, hardcover and library binding, giving a release date of November 2008 - however, given that these entries seem like glitch entries, reading "Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available," and that LemonySnicket.com still lists early 2009 as the release date, I'd take this with a pinch of salt.

To update you all, The Lump of Coal, estimated for release on 30th September this year, has had a cover added on Amazon! Enjoy the completely appropriate and non-threatening Christmassy whimsy.

The fourth and fifth paperbacks have been postponed for the time being; we don't know when (or, for that matter, if) they're coming out. I'd give it a couple of months, at least.
Edit: This is a response to a post that was deleted.

I somehow missed the news about The Lump of Coal. I suppose I'll buy it even though I've already read it numerous times online. Shame we can't get something new. Pirate book, where are you?!

Amazon.com has set a date for the book version of The Composer is Dead, and that date is: March 3rd, 2009. Edit: Also, it's not a Snicket book, but apparently Snicket likes it, so some of you might want to take a look: Mr. Fooster, Traveling on a Whim

It bothers me that Amazon does not list this as being a Book/CD, but $17.99 is a hefty price for a 40 page book. The book would be dull without the CD.

I'm confident it will come with the CD with a price tag like that, but it's certainly misleading of Amazon not to highlight that the CD comes packaged with it. Unless they genuinely don't know, which isn't implausible; I assume it's sort of a placeholder entry at the moment. Once a synopsis and cover come along, I imagine it'll be clearer, but that won't be for a while given how distant the release date is. Still, I'll update the front page of this thread to clarify that this should be coming with a CD of the performance, although I wonder if the text and the narration will differ substantially.
Edit: I remember reading another source more recently that confirmed it would be coming with the CD (and some Amazon listings note Nathaniel Stookey's involvement, which they presumably wouldn't if the CD wasn't included). Also, the following synopsis and Snicket bio have turned up for The Lump of Coal, indicating that the marketing for its publication is beginning:
--- This is a story about a lump of coal who can think, talk, and move itself around.
Is there a more charming holiday tale to behold? Probably, but Lemony Snicket has not written one. - Lemony Snicket has written many upsetting words, including those contained in A Series of Unfortunate Events and its supplementary materials. ---
Reminds me of The Latke (Etc.), so I presume the somewhat sarcastic tone will be retained.
