I thought the sexy bits of WWBU were quite well written, so I'm not sure he can go TOO wrong. I'm also hoping the consent line is somehow some sort of joke and not um a terrible message for readers . Still gotta get round to reading TB8

At the risk that I'll regret asking, would you care to explain that remark?

Also, one person in the comments just point out the line "Where queer can be as fluid as consent" appearing in a recurring early description of the book, which is indeed terrible and doesn't bode very well for the book. This line sounds really tongue-in-cheek, which would be typical for the tone of a Handler book. I could imagine one character lying about their sexuality or discovering their bisexuality, while another might lie about having been raped (or blackmail someone with that accusation). Of course I don't know anything about the plot yet, but I'm saying that headline-y descriptions like these could mean any number of things.

Belatedly for the U.S., and somewhat early for the U.K., here's your announcement of the publication of Daniel Handler's publisher-worrying novel, All The Dirty Parts. Yes, posting the announcement midway between the two release dates was definitely what I'd planned, I certainly didn't just forget. Title: All the Dirty PartsRelease Date: 28 August 2017 ( Source); 29 August 2017 ( Source); 19 October 2017 (U.K.) ( Source) Cover Art (Bloomsbury):Details: A novel that "looks honestly at the erotic lives and impulses of an all-too-typical young man." Described as a companion piece to Why We Broke Up. ( Source) The book "contains a great deal of sex and is thus making my publisher very nervous." ( Source)

There's a review out for The Bad Mood and the Stick, charges of racism against the original art style unmentioned: Quill & Quire.

Once again belatedly for the U.S. but early for the U.K., Snicket's new and quietly controversial picture book The Bad Mood and the Stick is out now/soon, while Handler's play Imaginary Comforts has begun its run at Berkeley Repertory Theater. Titles to be wiped from the front page once the U.K. release date / closing date passes. Title: The Bad Mood and the StickIllustrator: Matthew Forsythe Release Date: 3 October 2017 (U.S., Source); 2 November 2017 (U.K., Source) Cover Art (Little, Brown; Andersen Press):Details: The unpredictable story of a bad mood and a stick; where they came from, and where they will go. Cover and interior art were altered after causing offence; see here. Title: Imaginary Comforts, or The Story of the Ghost of the Dead RabbitRelease Date: October 5th - November 19th, 2017 (as a play) ( Source) Details: A play, presently described as follows: "The literary genius behind Lemony Snicket brings his relentlessly mischievous style to a new play for adults. Sarah's father is dead, her mother is in hysterics, and the new rabbi totally bungled the funeral. To further the absurdity, the ghost of a rabbit hops into her life, pushing her to confront her deepest issues. Fantastical and wise as well as hilarious and sobering, Imaginary Comforts celebrates ordinary people trying to make sense out of life in the midst of endless comedic chaos." ( Source.) Previously described as follows: "Fantastical and wise, hilarious and sobering, Imaginary Comforts celebrates ordinary people trying to make sense out of life in the midst of endless, comedic chaos that includes a bumbling rabbi, a hysterical widow, and, yes, the ghost of a dead rabbit." ( Source) Was, as of October 2015, having table readings at Berkeley Repertory Theater ( Source). As of January 2017, Googling the play's title returns the following preview text from DanielHandler.com, but which does not appear to be displayed on the website itself: "His first play, Imaginary Comforts, or The Story of the Ghost of the Dead Rabbit, will be produced this fall at Berkeley Repertory Theatre." A synopsis was finally revealed in March 2017 ( Source), which revealed it would be performed by Berkeley Repertory Theater and directed by Tony Taccone, who also worked with Handler on The Composer Is Dead.

From some recent tweets two things were super-briefly mentioned by Handler. I had no idea where to post about the second one; If someone does, I'm ok with moving it there. One, Daniel Handler has acknowledged in an official interview that he's working on a Lemony Snicket book (the only other time he said something about that, I think, was "Pu Songling", which now turns out to be a Daniel Handler-project). Two, ( link) also exciting to me:

The context in which he discusses writing a new Snicket book does make it sound more like something linked to the Averse narrative, as opposed to one of his various disconnected picture books. Reason to get excited, though it may be a few years before we hear anything more. Not sure where a Gothic Arches (I remember Merritt saying a while back that they weren't allowed to call themselves the Gothic Archies any more) project would go, but here or PProducts would be suitable, I think.

In line with Handler's recent Snicket releases, Bottle Grove has now been delayed three months in the U.K., to November 28th. The U.S. edition is still on track for August 27th. And so we update the 2019 release timetable once again: May 30th: Read Something Else (U.K.) July 4th: Swarm of Bees (U.K.) August 27th: Bottle Grove (U.S.) Fall: Poison for BreakfastNovember 28th: Bottle Grove (U.K.)

The alleged U.K. release date of Read Something Else on May 30th has been and gone; and yet, in Amazon.co.uk's assurance of "Usually dispatched within 1 to 3 months", I suspect that after all it was but a phantom. The current upcoming release calendar: July 4th: Swarm of Bees (U.K.) August 27th: Bottle Grove (U.S.) Fall: Poison for Breakfast(?) November 28th: Bottle Grove (U.K.) New information on Poison for Breakfast remains distressingly absent, though Handler's agency page continues to insist that it is set for this fall.

With all the shuffling of release dates, I can only apologise for the delay in posting this notice - Swarm of Bees has now released in the U.K., at last. Title: Swarm of Bees (Lemony Snicket) Illustrator: Rilla Alexander Cover:Which leaves the release calendar standing as follows: August 27th: Bottle Grove (U.S.) Fall: Poison for Breakfast(?) November 28th: Bottle Grove (U.K.) As noted in my previous post, Daniel Handler's agency page assures us that Poison for Breakfast remains set for "Fall 2019". Fall is fast approaching, and yet we still have no new information on this book since last year.

Amazon.com now seems to be listing Poison For Breakfast as due for release on the 1st of October, but whether or not this is accurate I have no idea — I’m not getting my hopes up, seeing as Amazon.co.uk lists the release date as the 1st of August, which has obviously been and gone with no sign of a release. There’s also no sign of a cover image yet.
